The California Football League (CFL) is a professional American football league that consists of 16 teams. It is one of New California's big five major leagues, and one of five professional American football leagues in North America. Each season begins with a three-week preseason in the first week of September, followed by the 17-week regular season which runs from late September until early January. Each team plays 16 games, with one bye week. After the season ends, six teams compete in the playoff tournament that culminates in the California Bowl, which is played in February. The most recent champions are the Stockton Firestars, who defeated the Los Angeles Chargers to win their first title in their existence. The Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers have the most titles, with three each.
The CFL was formed in 2032 as a breakaway league from the National Football League (NFL) of the Reformed States, carrying over three teams: the 49ers, Rams, and Chargers. The CFL is the second-largest sports league in New California by revenue, only behind the California Baseball League (CBL). It also has the second-highest attendance of any sports league in the nation, producing an annual 33.4 million spectators on average. The newest teams are the San Luis Obispo Generals and Yuba City 99s, having both joined the league in 2041.
