Fortizendria (sometimes Fortizane or The Fortlands; Zdrole: Fâohtizén(drieo), pronounced: [fɒ̂ːx.t̪i.zèːn.(d̠ɹ̠ɪ.jɤ)]), officially The Republic of Fortizendria, is an impoverished landlocked nation on the continent of Occeia, ruled by a decentralized collection of states that are collectively ruled by a one-party socialist government known as the Fautestra and headed by the Fautakh. It is among the poorest and least technologically advanced nations on Krystar, relying on foreign aid and piracy for much of its economic activity, although it does boast a cheap and adequate medical facility and a niche cultural tourism industry.
Etymology
Fortizane is the English equivalent to Fâohtizèn, which is believed to have come from an old Fvonil word meaning "high passage", although there are conflicting theories and none of them are definitive. Fortizendria comes from the Zdrole locative case of Fauhtizen (i.e. when people would say "at Fartizane"), which is Fâohtizèn + stro. -stro becomes -zdreo for "narrow"-gender, which then becomes -zdrieo after front vowels, which then becomes -drieo after /n/ - hence, Fâohtizèndrieo, which is often mistaken as the place's full name, "Fortizendria".
A similar process happened with Krystar, in which the Fortizendrians (Fortizendia + na, meaning "from at Fortizen", which gave the capital and denonym their names) had loaned the word "Krystar" for the concept of the whole planet, except it was interpreted as Krai + -stra, meaning the planet's name in Zdrole is actually Krai - or, reconverted to English, "Cry".
Fortizendria is still sometimes called "Fortizane" to more accurately reflect what the locals call it. This is however uncommon, as "The Fortizane" is often used to describe the geographic area in which the nation of Fortizendria resides - namely the area from the eastern and northern side of the mountains to the ocean, and usually used specifically for the arid climate area. Fortizendria is also sometimes nicknamed "The Fortlands", due to its location being relatively well fortified, save for the waters itself, which are primarily patrolled by Fortizendrian pirates.
History
Fortizendria presumably has a rich history, however it unfortunately is not well documented, perhaps in part because of its lack of infrastructure. Researchers are actively cobbling together records of the nation, but it will likely take a while before all of the data can be compiled for this remote area.
From what records do exist, it is clear that Fortizendria is both an ancient and relatively new nation. Civilization has lived in the Fortizane for an incredibly long time, and clay tablets bearing what are believed to be the common ancestral language of the Occe-Fortizian language family are still rarely unearthed, although most of these have either been looted to be sold privately or destroyed in civil conflict.
Fortizendria itself is split among many geographic areas, which despite being a one-party system govern a substantial amount of autonomy. It is believed that the government itself is loosely tied together through ideological reason, mutualist corruption, and a larger fear of more powerful neighboring nations. Fortizendrians themselves rarely consider themselves "Fortizendrian" in the sense of a unified nation, but do consider themselves "Fortizanians" in the sense of being ancestrally part of the Fortizane.
Fortizendria is known to have undergone several internal conflicts and civil wars, with eight primary geographic areas being involved in said conflicts. The last civil war, in which two halves had originally united against each other, left a notable mark on the nation, and is still largely represented in their modern day flag.
Despite a difference in language, and to a lesser extent culture and ideology, the Fortizane has remained relatively stable for several decades. There are a few reasons hypothesized for this. Despite being largely divided linguistically and familially, inhabitants of the Fortizane largely follow a similar culture and belief system. In addition, the Fautestran Socialist People's Party had gained power shortly after peacekeeping efforts put a universally disliked democratic leader in charge of the country. Although not universally liked, the Fautarchs of the new one-party system had successfully negotiated foreign aid stimulus packages and provided a public safety net for much of the population, as well as potentially negotiated deals with some of the less reputable organizations within the region. In addition, most Fortizendrians agreed after foreign peacekeeping efforts, along with certain other corporate and government operative involvement, that it was better to work together than to trust outside nations. There still remains a not insignificant amount of unrest with the modern government, but it is on a comparatively smaller scale, and now mostly pertains to protest riots and coup attempts by extremist rebels, with cultural infighting still being prevalent, but not on the scale of a looming civil war.
Climate
Fortizendria is mainly characterized for its arid and mountainous geography, which combined with its landlocked position has made it a relatively isolated and difficult area for development. It nevertheless has access to the lake at the center of Occeia, which has supplied the nation with an abundant fishing industry. The arid area from and including the eastern parts of the mountains are collectively called the Fortizane, which comprises the bulk of the geographic area that is Fortizendria. A substantial amount of the climate in this area is comprised of thorn forests.
There are several environmental concerns for the area, including overfishing, coal burning and pollutants from manufacturing, and leaks and disasters caused by mismanagement, neglect, and corruption, primarily by larger businesses, along with tampering by more rebellious locals. The Fautestra has largely cracked down on practices detrimental to their environment, although have struggled to curry support from outside governments to help enforce their policies.
Economy
Fortizendria is one of the poorest nations on Krystar, with a GDP of only about $5 billion (or lb40trillion in pounds), just over 0.05% that of some of the larger world economies. It consequently has a very low Human Development Index, currently estimated at about 0.395, among the lowest on Krystar. It has a notably low Gini coefficient of 26.8, with wealth being distributed quite evenly.
While most of the money is inside the relatively less-well-regulated informal economy, the government does receive a substantial amount of cashflow from taxing international mining industries for working in their borders, as well as from tourism, foreign aid, and lucrative domestic and foreign investments, although they are secretive about where this money is actually going. There is also speculation that they may partly profit off of more sinister means, but there is not sufficient evidence to confirm this.
The government spends a lot of this money on social services, including welfare and health care. Unfortunately, even with this focus on quality of life, and investment into industry, the nation is still very poor, and even with a relatively strong percentage of taxes going towards these sectors, they are still weak by global standards. Much of the government's policing and military budget goes towards protecting mining and fishing operations, as well as enforcing environmental regulations on them, which has left them with little in the way of domestic protection, with some help coming from international organizations.
Remittances from fathers working in other countries, notably Elaria and Hai'wan, although this practice is relatively uncommon due to a generally isolationist and cynical attitude toward other nations.
Industry
The economy of Fortizendria is primarily comprised of agriculture, much of which is centered around arid livestock, fishing, and sea agriculture. A lot of Fortizendria's revenue comes from mineral extraction from its mountains, which is largely invested in by the government and international corporations, although environmental regulations are surprisingly well-enforced, perhaps because virtually all of the police and a substantial amount of military spending goes to making sure industries are kept in check. It also is a producer of much sand and glass, although it is in limited supply, as most of its sand is not readily workable for industrial purposes.
Despite being a largely agricultural developing economy, many other industries have permeated into the nation. Tourism is established, even despite the relatively isolationist population and underdeveloped facilities. This is partly due to the fact that it has a unique culture, environment and history, and also partly because it is fairly primitive, giving a unique lifestyle perspective to travelers. It also is a hot spot for conspiracy theorists, Occeian mountain climbers, and followers of Pentacyclonism. It also has a surprisingly robust yet very cheap medical system, funded in part by foreign aid, as well as a rich wealth of alternate medicines, which ironically has made it a hot spot for incredibly affordable medical tourism. However, its low cost and culture has often given it a poor reputation, and is rated poorly among international governments and medical institutions, despite still being recommended by some doctors as a genuine way to save costs.
Fortizendria is host to many other "advanced" yet dubious industries, including its well-renowned production of certain "medicinal" drugs. It also hosts a growing manufacturing industry, but between regulations and less friendly investment, most manufacturing is specifically for cheap automobiles, textiles and weaponry, much of which is exported as "cheap and dodgy". Fortizendria also hosts a substantial financial sector, including affordable banking and insurance programs, although many of them are dubious at best, with industries building a reputation for money laundering and fraud.
The internet has managed to become popular among Fortizendrians, with a small industry being built around it, much of which consists of niche online entertainment, including gaming, phony alien footage, live reactions, native and cultural exploration, teachings of Pentacyclonism, and clickbait cringe one-off clips that don't make a whole lot of sense. However, the internet has been largely used for more questionable practices, including rampant hacking and scamming, along with rampant online piracy. Speaking of piracy, Fortizendria is also well-known for having actual pirates along its lake, as well as gangs and bandits that loot from within and outside of the nation. There is even some speculation that the government may even aid some hacker and pirate attacks in an effort to bring in more revenue for the nation, although much like the rest of the government, this remains uncertain at best.
