Yoganian names usually consist of one or more given names and a surname the former of which is usually gender-specific.

Yoganian given names

Naming laws

There are various laws concerning names in Yogania. A newborn child has to be named within a week of it´s birth or the parents will face a 100€ (106$) fine. They can either pick from a list of 4500 Yoganian names or choose a name themselves. If the go for the latter options they will have to get the name approved and follow these rules: The name has to be at least 3 letters long, and it should not be inappropriate or detrimental to the well-being of the child. It should only contain letters available in the Yoganian alphabet (exception for foreign-born children).

Naming customs

It is not uncommon for Yoganian children to have multiple given names. The first one is usually the one for daily use. In 2014, 30% of Yoganian newborns were given only one name, 49% two names, 18% three names and 3% four names or more. A lot of Yoganian people shorten their names or use a nickname, for example Jack for Jakob, Hal for Halgor or Halthar, Yod for Yodolyd, Jog, Jock or Joki for Jokhal. Names vary depending on the region, people in Bukjer have a higher percentage of people with French names, Yokjer usually use Yoganian names (Yogodan, Yodolyd, Gordon, Jakob) Kjerso people use Kjerso Yoganian names more often (Jokhal, Yoloney, Jom, Thumin). Foreign names (usually English or French) have become more and more popular over the last 30 years, for example the names Thomas or Lucas finding their way into the most popular names list. Names usually are gender specific but there are some unisex names (e.g. Thumin (more feminine than masculine), Halthar (completely unisex).
