The protected areas of the United States are managed by an array of different, federal, state and local level authorities and receive varying leels of protection. Some areas are managed as wilderness, while others are operated with a defree of acceptable commerical use.

Federal protected areas include lands and waters owned by the federal government. Within these protected areas there are various categories of differing degrees of protection.
