List of political parties in Batsweda
Political parties in Batsweda have been de jure banned since 2022 under the military-ruled Council of Transitional Governance. Before the outbreak of the Third Batswedan Civil War, Batsweda had a multi-party system, with individual parties typically unable to secure power alone, requiring the formation of coalition governments. Political parties traditionally emerged and operated as part of pre-existing patronage networks within and between ethnic and religious groups, and positions taken during the Second Batswedan Civil War between 1992 and 2002.
Pillarization
Batswedan society has since the 1960s been divided into three social cleavages, known as "pillars". These pillars traditionally have been formed on the historical divisions between socialists, Salamids, and Christians within the country since independence, with cultural and political institutions forming around sectarian lines. Since democratization in 2002, some political scientists have discussed the gradual de-pillarization of Batsweda, particularly within political spaces.
