Elections were held on November 5th, 2024 in the United States, to elect the President, Vice-President, members of Congress, and numerous state officials.
Presidential election
A Presidential election was held on November 5th to elect the successor to incumbent President Joe Biden of the Democratic Party, who withdrew his candidacy for a second term. The Alliance for Democracy, a coalition formed by the Democrats, Progressive-Populists, Socialists, and CDS, nominated incumbent Democratic Vice-President Kamala Harris for the Presidency and Progressive-Populist Minnesota Governor Tim Walz for the Vice-Presidency. The Conservative Coalition, comprising the Republicans and Dixiecrats, nominated independent ex-president Donald Trump and Ohio Republican senator JD Vance for the Presidency and Vice-Presidency, respectively.
The Harris-Walz ticket led in most polls throughout the campaign period, buoyed by a recovering economy and strong debate performances. However, Harris was criticised for failing to distinguish herself from President Biden's more unpopular policies. Harris' shift, in the final weeks of the campaign, from economic populist rhetoric to an emphasis on "woke" progressive causes and preserving democracy drew rebukes from the Socialists and Progressive-Populists.
The Conservative ticket was marred by scandals and legal challenges, but Trump's anti-establishment rhetoric and protectionist policies attracted many rural voters, especially Progressive-Populists. While Trump trailed in the polls for the bulk of the campaign period, his numbers recovered near the end.
