The Hero-Class Ultra-Heavy Cruiser is a class of ultra-heavy cruisers deployed by the Libriarn Navy. The class was developed to be a convetional powered and cheaper version of the City-Class after economic pressure meant that the navy would have to cut back on spending. Design work was completed in a record 8 months and was essentially a conversion of the City-Class to use gas-fed boilers with the exhaust trunked into the aft sensor tower. The Class is named for various heros of Librira, primarily early founders from the revolution. The class was ordered for the 1980 building plan, however the worsening economic situation as well as they questionable utility of such large ships ensured that only 2 were finished, with one being cancelled on the slips, its parts being used in the construction of the Congression-Class
Development
The Hero Class has its origins in the City-Class, originally being an alternative design (Project 212) that used an array of gas-fed boilers, or in one alternative diesel engines to propel itself. Once construction on the City-Class began, the cost became to be too much for the navy to build the original 7, the navy thus decided to curtail the nuclear-powered ships, in favor of a conventional version. Work on the previous project and new design work was undertaken on an accelerated schedule in 1978 to create a cheaper alternative to the city-class. This would eventually result in the Hero-class.
Design
The Design of the hero-class although based off of the already constructed city-class, required some additional work to be steam powered. Firstly was exhaust, whereas nuclear powered craft required no large smokestacks, gas powered ships did. re configuring the ships interior around this fact while making minimal changes to the internal layout was the majority of the naval architects work. In the end the ship was lengthened about 7 meters to accommodate the larger power plant, and a exhaust was integrated into the aft sensor tower array, to save space. The head designer on the project was awarded the Order of Labor for his work.
