Azikala, officially the Qetitan Kingdom of Azikala, is a country located along the western end of the Isthmus of Etrilio, in northeast Malidia. To the north and east of the country is the Acadian Ocean, while the Marlos Ocean lies to the south. Azikala spans a total area of 455,335km², with its western border defined mostly by the Ukrid Mountains. Most of Azikala’s population of 10,573,298 live in the more temperate north, with almost a third of the country’s total populace living in Archobarzane, Azikala’s cultural and economic centre. Mayndint is the country’s capital.

The NAME123 Mountains and the Ukrid Desert have been inhabited since early antiquity by the indigenous Izughrani peoples. Beginning in the 6th century BC, the north of modern Azikala was settled by Malidian civilisations advancing eastwards. Migration of the Izughranis from 300 to 700 AD to lowland regions established the Qetitan people of the Tamax Plains, divided into the 'Classical Three' cultures of Azikala: the Awinimars, Bareghs, and Kheniris, who established small kingdoms along the north Azikala after the fall of the Empire in the 8th century. In the following 600 years, dynasties from all three civilisations established the first unified Azikalan states, but it was the Kheriris who had achieved hegemony over the region by the 12th century.

Azikala was colonised by the Santian Empire in 1336, under which it was given the name of Polvaria. The Azikalan coast become one of the largest hubs of the Acadian-Tamaran slave trade, with the descendents of these slaves and Santian settlers forming the Ajnabi culture, present-day Azikala's second-largest ethnic group. Under Santian rule, a Pan-Qetitan ideology amongst many natives began to form, In the 1510s, the Clementine Revolution established the first Qetitan kingdom in the north of Azikala, driving the Santians out to the south. The 'Qetitan High Age' persisted for the next twp centuries until it was invaded by the Oktadonian Empire in 1741. Azikala was divided between Oktadonian Polvaria to the north and Santian Polvaria to the south at the Arceneaux Line until 1833, when it became solely under Oktadonian control after a failed Santian invasion. Today, Azikalan culture remains rooted in centuries of colonial, cultural, and ethnic exchange.

After riots against colonial rule, Azikala was granted protectorate status in 1914, and fully achieved independence in 1936. The Principality of Azikala, the regime that ruled after decolonisation, perpetuated a Ajnabi minoritarian policy known as sopra. The Principality was overthrown by a popular Qetitan rebellion in 1971 during the Autumn of Flames, replaced by the Second Kingdom of Azikala under the totalitarian rule of Naravas, who promoted his personal philosophy of lmunakasha as the state ideology. Since his death in 2011, the country has been in a state of civil unrest known as the Spoiled Decade.

Etymology

Azikala is the anglicisation of the Qetitan endonym ⵊⵊⴱⵍⴰⴽⵙⵓⵎ. This derives from an Ancient Izughrani phrase az kalan, best translated as 'new sand'. This references the migration of the ancient Izughrani ethnic groups from around 700–1200 A.D.
