The National Bureau of Anomaly Security (NBAS) is the Paranormal Investigative service of the United Commonwealth. An agency of the United Commonwealth Department of Justice, the NBAS is a member of the Tokyo Sector. The NBAS reports directly to the Director of National Intelligence, and functions as the main Paranormal investigation service for not only the United Commonwealth as well as Canada, with partnerships with Washington, Puerto Rico, Texas and the Popular Front.

Although the functions of the NBAS are mostly unique, it shares many of its activities with the Midwestern Department of Civilian Defense's Paranormal Division and American Project Blue Book. While PBB primarily researches and the DCD aims on protecting its own civilians, the NBAS does both, as well as protecting what it is investigating and working with the TTARS. Unlike the FBI and CIA of the west (and FBI and OSS of the UC itself), the NBAS focuses equally on international investigations as it does domestic. Since 2005, the NBAS is organized under the Director of National Intelligence. Despite its primarily peaceful narrative, it has conducted several raids on suspected targets, most notably during the Congo Genetics Company crisis of the late 90s.

Purpose

When the NBAS was created, its purpose was to investigate reports of suspected Western and Soviet aircraft in 1983. After further investigations, the NBAS transitioned into a more paranormal-based organization in 1984, which continues to be its primary purpose in the present day.

According to its official budget of 1995, the NBAS has several main goals.

  • Protecting the people of not only the Commonwealth, but the world as a whole from the unexplained.
  • Protecting the unexplained when possible.
  • Maintaining relations with other investigative services, regardless of international relations elsewhere.
  • Researching and attempting to explain the "unexplained".

If the latter is successfully explained, the NBAS will typically hand further research over to civilian hands, however this is occasionally not the case.

Relationship with other Agencies

The bureau works with other UC agencies, typically the FBI on domestic matters and OSS on foreign ones. While officially operating for the UC and Canada, the bureau also works abroad in accordance with the Tokyo Sector, most notably in conjunction with the British MI5 and NCA. The closest international cooperation the UC has is with the other Anglosphere nations, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Despite having little other cooperation between the two nations (barring anti-piracy operations in the Great Lakes), the bureau often works with the Midwestern DCD's Paranormal Division. The Bureau also works with the Irish Army during Operation Hallowtide.
