History

Background of 6 Formers RR's of the NAS

Northern States Railroad

The Northern States Railroad (Reporting Mark NSR) would be chartered in 1891 to Rival the Great Northern Railway and the Northern Pacific Railway and Milwaukee Road being formed of many abandoned lines by smaller railroads by the US Federal Government being merged with 6 Other Railroads in 1969 to form the North American System. The NSR would be a Class I railroad being one of the most profitable during the early 1900s and 1940s as the Railroad being a Major Rival had to do very treachrous things and introduce new tech and better marketing to win Customers over the GN and MILW.

NSR Had 3 Passenger Services with the Most Popular being the Trans-American Express which would run from Chicago via Billings and Bellingham down to Seattle and its Communter Service in Washington, Plus the Rocky Mountaineer Flyer. Both the Communter Srvice and the TAE would be discountied in 1970 by the NAS with the RMF being handled by the nowandays NAS RMFS. NSR would be a major part of the North American System Merger being the largest railroad in it and would be one of the causes for the Burlington Northern Merger.

Utah Western Railroad

The Utah Western (Reporting mark UW was a Class I Railroad in the United States chartered in 1865 by Willam I. Monson founding also the UWLMS and would be building locomotives using the Utah Western as a Shipper but also as a Side Money maker for the already Millionaire at the Age of 20. THe Railroad would rival the SP and UP spanning from Denver to the North Californian Coastline based in the City of Salt Lake City. William would go on to pass the railroad to his Son before dying. The Utah Western would be one of the main railroads in the West as it gave a better chance for farmers and others to have another choice instead of the Big Three UP DRGW and WP as the slogan "The Utah Native Line" goes back to when Utahans.

The UW would be incorporated apart of the 6 Railroads to form the North American System and would officially be apart of it in Late 1969. Though the UWLMS was the last part that would shutdown due to the Utah Western being Merged and would become its own Little Scrapping and rebuilding Company Similar to NREX. Nowadays the last remaining parts of the Utah Western is the Utah Western Scenic Railroad and 2 Steam Locomotives and 1 UW SD18 numbered 3210. Despite the Utah Western being apart of the NAS all Rolling Stock and Locomotives werent Fully repainted unlike KCN, NSR and WCR which got repainted early and became some sights when visiting the East Coast for Railfanners. All Management would Officially be apart of the NAS in 1971 along with all Routes and Operations handed over. THe Utah Western only operated Communter Services but it ceaswed due to the founding of Amtrak by NAS.

Kansas City Northern

West Cascade Railway

South Coast Transportation

The South Coast Transportation ((reporting mark SCT SCTX)) would be formed in 1934 by a merger of the Southwest Railroad and the West Gulf Coast Line. The South Coast Transportation would be a Class I Railroad based in the Southern United States from Houston to Dallas across the Southeastern States being a Dual Merger to combat the Southern Railway (U.S.). The SCT would also have a leasing company (now defunct) named South Coast Transit Leasing with the reporting mark of SCTX.

The South Coast's Slogan would be "The Southeaster Mover" being a famous one mainly known for being used on its 2 Main Passenger Routes both going Defunct in 1985 by Amtrak in replacement of the Sunset Limited. The SCT would exist from 1934 to 1969 and would be formaly apart of the North American System, being one of the 6 Main Predecessors of the North American System. SCTX would be handed over as staying as it until its merger with NAS's Leasing Company as a Subsidiary but going defunct after all assets going to the NAS Leasing

Texas and Oklahoma System

NAS Merger

Formation of NAS

Perserved NSR HQ in Seattle

NAS would be formed by 6 Railroads, the Northern States Railroad, Utah Western Railroad, Kansas City and Northern, West Cascade Railway South Coast Transportation, Texas Oaklahoma System. The Merger was to combat the Automobile and Airplane Businesses being the largest Merger at the time in 1969 until the introduction of Burlington Northern. NAS being a fairly new Railroad would only have its Intercity Trains inherited from the NSR and the Others for 2 Years before only serving Commuter Trains which only one existing being the St Louis Corridor (NAS).

NAS would inherit the Name of the NSR for 2 Years before changing to NAS showing that its runs in the three countries of Canada and Mexico. NAS would also be one of the Few Railroads in testing many different GE and EMD Locomotives along with Experiments in 1975 known as the North Cargo Express or the NCE which would be a testing phase of using faster locomotives and freight cars in transporting from the St Paul Hub to the Port of Seattle in under 2 days. The Project would soon go under in the Wake of the 1970s energy crisis. NAS Would also be one of the first testers/buyers of the then EMD SD50. (Soon after these would be rebuilt into SD50-2's and then SD50-3's.

Impact of the BNSF Merger

Burlington Northern was and has been NAS's Biggest Competetior in the Northern Part of the United States with them being the only competition due to Milwaukee Road going out of business in the 80s leaving the north to BN and NAS for decades until 1995 when the failed Santa Fe Pacific Corporation with Santa Fe Industries and its Company the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, being bought by Burlington Northern and merged forming Burlington Northern Santa Fe in 1995 introducing an entirely new company that would rival the System seeing more Customers now between two Massive Corporations with BNSF being one major company and NAS Being another the only difference being Chicago. in 2008 BNSF would be bought out by Berkshire Hathaway, introducing new ownership to BNSF and the Reforming causing NAS to do its own Reforms and improvements to catch up with the Class I. NAS would also partner with BNSF in the Pandemic to increase traffic with that Partnership still going on as of December 26th 2023.
