Nuclear Explosion of Sabmud
The Nuclear Explosion of Sabmud was caused by a nuclear accident that occurred on Monday 11th April 1912, at the Sabmud Power Plant near the city of Byzitni in the north of the Preliprestinian region. It is considered the worst nuclear disaster in the history of IEarth, both in terms of casualties and devastation caused.
The accident was deemed by the High Magistrates Court a result of "human error and professional incompetence". The cause of the accident was believed to have been done when Dr Irgo Vandostan, Safety Supervisor and Power Regulation Office at Sabmud, conducted monthly policy safety checks on all the plants reactors, however was unable to access the 3 and 4 reactor due to security access issues. The lack of access meant reactors were unchecked and unregulated causing the overheating and eventual explosion of reactor 4.
A large amount of energy was suddenly released, vaporising superheated cooling water and rupturing the reactor core in a highly destructive nuclear explosion with a blast radius. This was immediately followed by an open-air reactor core fire that released considerable airborne radioactive contamination that precipitated onto parts of Preliprestina and Central Ausiana. As a result of the explosion, everyone living in the region was killed and the rising ambient radiation levels off-site meant Preliprestina became an International exclusion zone, becoming illegal for all citizens to enter.
No attempts were made by international committees or governments to investigate the causes.
The United Preli Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation has, at multiple times, reviewed all the published research on the incident and found that at present, 2,000,000 citizens were killed and over 10,000 animal species that show permanent physical deformities and breeding mutations are likely to be attributable to the exposure of the radiation. As a result, most of these animals are classified with "Preli" preceding the name of the animal, such as the Prelian Ox.
