Pegasus Health, formerly called Pegasus Horizon Health System, is a healthcare system based in Salisbury, Rhodesia. The healthcare network primary serves the Greater Salisbury region with a network of five hospitals of which Salisbury Grace is its flagship hospital; outpatient clinics; Urgent Care centers; primary care and specialty care centers; and four long-term care nursing facilities.
Pegasus Health has a combine total of 2,085 beds and has over 11,500 employees. Thanks to its employees it has been on the list of the "100 Best Companies to Work For" published by Wealth magazine for fifteen consecutive years. It continued to achieve this ranking through 2019.
It also offers residency and fellowship training programs in 15 adult specialties and 10 children's specialties and serves as a teaching hospital for Vista University College of Medicine.
Its hospitals are widely regarded as some of the greatest hospitals in Rhodesia, with Salisbury Grace ranked No. 1 in the country on the 2019-2020 The Rhodesian Herald List of "Best Hospitals", maintaining its position near or on the top for more than 25 years.
History
On December 24, 2012, Pegasus unexpectedly announced the departure of it President and Chief Executive Officer Bob Hawley. Hawley was the mastermind behind the merger between Salisbury Grace and Northwest General Hospitals that created Pegasus Horizon Health System, he departed Pegasus a week later on December 31. According to The Salisbury Business Times, the reason for his departure was disagreements between Hawley and Roberta Thompson on the direction that the health system should be taken in. In January 2013, Pegasus named Dr. Alana Cahill as its new President and Chief Executive Officer with an effective date of January 24, 2013.
Pegasus Health acquired nursing facilities operated Kind Healthcare Group, through its operating group The Gardens for R$23 million, in July 2014.
In April 2017, Pegasus Health announced the acquisition of Mashonaland Hospital for R$1.5 million. With its purchase, Pegasus saved the hospital from being the 12th hospital to close in Sinoia due poor revenue and low reimbursements. Dr. Alana Cahill said in a statement that “Pegasus Health System is determined to modernize the facility, make it more efficient, recruit physicians, reopen its ER, and keep all of its Ministries services, that the Sinoia community depends on.” The 214-bed acute care hospital is located 120 miles from the capital, Salisbury.
In October 2018, Pegasus Health and MedCam Health System signed a binding letter of intent to form a joint venture by merging their Catholic health systems, Resurrection Healthcare (part of Pegasus), and Mercy Health (part of MedCam). The finalized agreement established a joint venture and merged both Resurrection and Mercy and their respected subsidiaries, into Mercy Health Partners. After receiving the necessary regulatory and religious approvals, the merger became effective on September 1, 2019.
On March 1, 2019, Pegasus Horizon Health System changed its name to Pegasus Health as part of a rebranding campaign.
In February 2020, Pegasus Health announced the acquisition of the Hershberger Institute for Ears and Eyes for R$61.1 million. The deal was formalized on April 2, 2018. In a statement from Hershberger Institute for Ears and Eyes' President John Abram, MD, FACS announced the finalization of the acquisition to make HIEE a part of the Pegasus Health.
