In Sulivannian politics, there are two major parties, the Progressive Democratic party and the Liberal Federal Unionist party; five smaller major parties which hold significant status in national and subdivisional parliaments, the Social Democratic Alliance, the Conservative, the Sulivannia First, the Greens and the National Democratic Libertarians parties, and numerous minor political parties. For simplicity, only parties which hold at least one seat in the Parliament of Sulivannia are listed.

Major Political Parties

Progressive Democratic

The Progressive Democratic party, or simply the Pro Dems were found in its current state in 1928, and formed from the Sulivannian Labour Party (1835-1928), which itself derived from the National Labour Party (1821-1835). The party is the mainstream centre-left party of the country and supports improved conditions for the working and middle class, broader civil rights, increased economic regulation, a cleaner environment, increased scientific advancement, improved education and better public healthcare. Main support comes from young to middle-aged residents as well as significant minority support, from working to middle-class areas in the small and large cosmopolitan cities nationwide, small farming towns and villages along the Tremond River Valley, while still retaining moderate support in some rural areas in the relatively conservative-leaning southern states. Currently the party has held a majority of seats in both chambers in the parliament of Sulivannia since 2019, as a coalition government with the Social Democratic Alliance party, and a plurality of state and territorial legislature seats since 2017.

  • House of Representatives Seats: 294/608
  • Senate Seats: 105/254
  • State and Territorial House of Representatives Seats: 1764/3771
  • State and Territorial Senate Seats: 861/1923

Liberal Federal Unionist

The Liberal Federal Unionist party, or simply the Lib Feds formed in 1878, following the split of the Federalist Party (1821-1878) into the Lib Feds and the Freedom Liberal Party (1878-1921). The party merged with the smaller Conservative party, becoming the Liberal-Conservative party during 1931 to 1977 until the Conservatives split off again. The party is the mainstream centre-right party of the country and is moderately patriotic, supporting strong economic growth, tougher immigration, large businesses, cleaner environment although with limited measures, reduced regulation and increasing scientific advancement. Main support comes from primarily conservative-leaning middle-class voters, businesspeople, upper-class voters from more affluent parts of cities, as well as some support from lower-class voters. A large majority of the rural population also supports the Lib Feds, and support is evenly distributed through the country. Currently the party is part of the opposition in both chambers in the parliament of Sulivannia, having controlled the legislature from 2011 to 2019, along with a minority of state and territorial legislature seats since 2017.

  • House of Representatives Seats: 238/608
  • Senate Seats: 96/254
  • State and Territorial House of Representatives Seats: 1517/3771
  • State and Territorial Senate Seats: 794/1923

Other Major Political Parties

There are five smaller major political parties which hold seats in the Sulivannian Parliament, which hold power to a much smaller degree than the Pro Dems and Lib Feds, however they hold significant sway in political discourse, particularly in the Sulivannian Senate.

  • The Social Democratic Alliance party, or the Soc Dems is a left-wing socialist, populist party formed in 2015, winning the third-largest number of seats in both houses in the 2019 general election. The party enabled a majority government between the Pro Dems and Soc Dems of 324 seats in the lower house.
  • The Conservative party, is a right-wing conservative pro-isolationist, pro-small government party which initially more than doubled their delegation from 13 seats to 39 seats in the 2015 general election. However in the 2019 general election, the party lost three-quarters of their 36 lower house seats, down to 9 members.
  • The Sulivannia First party, formerly the Sulivannia Nationalist Party before 2015, a centrist, big-tent, pro-nationalist party which more than tripled their lower house seat count from 3 members to 11 seats in the 2015 general election.
  • The Greens, formerly the The Green Party before 1995, is a social democratic, left-wing environmentalist party formed in 1955 has consistently held between four and ten lower house members since gaining their first seat in 1974.
  • The National Democratic Libertarians party, or the Nat Dems is a centre-left, libertarian, pro-small government party formed in 1913 between members of the then Freedom Liberal Party and then Sulivannian Labour Party.
