The Ships currently form the backbone, of Libriran screens for their important Ultra-Heavy Cruisers and Cruiser/Carriers. The ships has received numerous minor refits during their careers to update, various electronic or weapons systems, the most comprehensive program carried out between 2000-2010 saw the ships all be updated to the M-900 missile and newer fire control technology. The Region-Class Cruiser is a Guided-missile cruiser, built for and operated by the Libriran Navy. The class currently are the last class of cruisers operated by the Libriran navy, with the rest having been retired. The ships are all named after regions in Librira. The ships were first ordered in 1973 for the 1975 building program, with 10 originally planned, 4 were cancelled due to cost and time overruns.

Design

Design work on what would become the Region-class began in 1972, as Project 35. It was intended as a medium 'independent' cruiser, to operate in a variety of roles, in support of Destroyers, and other larger ships. It was thus equipped with potent anti-ship and anti-submarine equipment, with both AShMs and ASW rockets. The first ship was laid down in 1975.

The ships were designed to use the potent M-700 Missile, which is house in the large angled launch tubes on either side of the superstructure. These weapons were upgraded to M-900 in the 1990s. In addition it has a small stern hanger and flight deck for helicopters. It operates the PA-165 and can operate 2 helicopters off its flight deck, but only store 1 in its hanger. In addition to these systems the class has a singly twin turret mounting 150mm guns. These guns are dual purpose, and automatically loaded. Ships of the class also can utilize a series of ASW rocket launchers to combat enemy submarines.

10 Ships were originally ordered. 5 were to be built under the 1975 program, and the second series of 5 under the 1980 program. However, problems during construction at the shipyards, as well as worsening economic situation, meant that only 6 ships were completed. the last four were scrapped in various stages of completion.

The ships are expected to continue operation until 2025 at the earliest when its expected Project 492-class ships are expcted to begin replacing them. There is also proposals to convert the ships to 'light Arsenal ships' which would involve rebuilding the ships and realigning their weapons systems to be all VLS launched missiles. The enormous cost of this project has led it to be shelved in the meantime.
