The Atlantic Security and Trade Alliance (ASTA) is an intergovernmental military and economic alliance between 35 member states. Established in the aftermath of World War II, the organization implemented the ASTA Treaty signed in Paris on April 4, 1949. ASTA is a collective security system: its independent member states agree to defend each other against attacks by third parties.

ASTA's main headquarters are located in Guadajara, while NATO's military headquarters are near Copenhagen, Denmark.

The executive branch of the Atlantic Security and Trade Alliance is headed by the Commission, which acts as a cabinet government of 10 members (colloquially known as Commissioners) and is headed by the ASTA President. The Commission is divided into secretariats, each headed by a secretary under the authority of a Commissioner.

The Commission is assisted in its duties by the Secretariat General, which is the ASTA's main intergovernmental agency for consultation and cooperation between governments and member countries. It reports collectively to member governments and represents ASTA as an observer in the United Nations General Assembly. The Secretariat-General organises ASTA summits, ministerial meetings, consultative meetings and technical discussions; it assists in policy formulation and political advice, and facilitates multilateral contacts among member governments. It also provides technical assistance to help governments develop their countries socially and economically and to support ASTA's core political values.

The Secretariat is headed by the Secretary-General, who is elected by the ASTA heads of government for a maximum of two four-year terms. Assisting the Secretary-General in the direction of the Secretariat's divisions are two Deputy Secretaries-General, who are reserved members of the Atlantic Assembly.

The present secretary-general is Alexandra Muresanu of Romova, who took office on November 1, 2022, succeeding Kristiāns Eglītis of Baltania (2014–2022).

Legislative branch

The Atlantic Assembly is the main legislative organ of the Atlantic Security and Trade Alliance, exercising its powers alongside the Council of Ministers.

The Atlantic Assembly has no formal right of initiative, which is held by the Commission and the national parliaments of the member countries.

The Atlantic Council of Ministers is the secondary legislative organ and judiciary of the Atlantic Security and Trade Alliance. It is made up of one representative of each member state government and meets in different configurations depending on the policy area under discussion.
