Etymology

The word "Soviet" is derived from a Russian word сове́т (sovét) meaning council, assembly, advice, harmony, concord and all ultimately deriving from the proto-Slavic verbal stem of vět-iti ("to inform"), related to Slavic věst ("news"), English "wise", the root in "ad-vis-or" (which came to English through French), or the Dutch weten ("to know"; cf. wetenschap meaning "science"). The word sovietnik means "councillor".

The traditional English name "Venland" derives from Latin "Venimia", which means "home of the Vens". The name comes from the Slavic tribe (Venish: Veni, Venové) and, according to legend, their leader Venn, who brought the tribe to Venland to settle the region.

After the Perlich monarchy was overthrown in the april revolution in 1920, the Venish lands lacked a common English short name. The Venish Ministry of Foreign Affairs recommended the English name Venland and the Politburo approved Venland as the official short name in 1921.

Politics

Government

There are three power hierarchies in the Venland: the legislature represented by the Supreme Soviet, the government represented by the Central Committee, and the Communist Party of the Venland (CPV), the only legal party and the ultimate policymaker in the country.

Communist Party

At the top of the Communist Party is the Central Committee, elected at Party Conferences. The Central Committee in turn votes for a Politburo, Secretariat and the General Secretary, the de facto highest office in the Soviet Union. Depending on the degree of power consolidation, it is either the Politburo as a collective body or the General Secretary, who always are one of the Politburo members, that effectively lead the party and the country.

The Communist Party maintains its dominance over the state largely through its control over the system of appointments. All senior government officials and most deputies of the Supreme Soviet are members of the CPV.
