Incidents and Accidents

  • On November 21, 1990, YryelAir flight 2002, a Þórran 939-400, crashed into a motorway embankment while attempting to make an emergency landing at Sde Dagán airport, in Sde Dagán. Of the 113 people on board the flight, 64 survived and 49 died. The accident became known as the Sde Dagán disaster and was both the first hull loss and first fatal accident for YryelAir. The aircraft was written off after the disaster.
  • On January 20, 1998, YryelAir flight 9056, a Fokker 100, crashed into a residential area in Hof Paz immediately after takeoff from Lotan international Airport. The crash killed all 98 people on board the plane plus 7 other people on the ground. The investigation concluded that the crash was caused by a malfunction in the thrust reversers on the no.2 engine, causing at least three uncommanded reverse thrust deployments and thus loss of power, stall, and roll to the right.
  • On March 31, 2021, YryelAir flight 216, a Þórran 979-300, disappeared over the northern Sunadic ocean. Although the search for the aircraft is ongoing, wreckage has confirmed that the plane crashed and that none of the 257 people on board survived. This was the first YryelAir crash in over 20 years as well as the first disappearance of a YryelAir plane and the deadliest YryelAir crash to date.
