Zaihan (Zaihanese: 子罕 Zǐhǎn) is a sovereign state located in eastern Oridia. Bordered by !unnamed and Sarangol to the north, !unnamed to the west, and Bhasar and Samho to the south, the country's coastline gives it access to the !Pacific Ocean. Zaihan's 913 million inhabitants reside primarily in the eastern coastal region and in the capital Daohai. The country is divided into 14 provinces and four municipalities, which collectively contain 789 districts. Its population makes it the second most populous in the world.

Zaihan is considered to be one of the historical cradles of civilization, seeing numerous dynasties and cliques over the course of its multi-thousand year history. After the War of Two Summers in the 900s, Zaihan was created as a unified kingdom ruled by the Yao dynasty. Establishing an expansive empire by expanding south into Samho and Yachen, the country remained relatively stable until its involvement in the Great War on the side of the Allianz. The imperial government fell during the Republican Revolution in 1943 and the country withdrew from the war shortly thereafter. The Republican forces battled the Yao loyalists in the ensuing civil war. The Republicans proclaimed victory in 1946, authoring a new constitution that established Zaihan as a democratic republic.

The country is a unitary semi-presidential republic and is often characterized as a developing country under a hybrid regime. Despite decades of stagnation after the fall of the imperial government, the economy expanded following the death of its first President, Ming Sui-Yen. Zaihan is a founding member of the East Oridian Conference and the Congress of Nations. The country is constitutionally neutral, albeit maintains a large standing military.

Etymology

The word "Zaihan" originates from a portmanteau of the Zaihanese words Zài hǎishàng (在海上), meaning "on the sea".
