Politics

Aetolia is classified as a non-partisan parliamentary republic. The Aetolian Republic's unicameral legislature is the Gerousia, also known as the Senate. Candidates for the Senate run independently and are elected in nation-wide elections. Despite the non-partisan nature of the Republic, Senators tend to group into "blocs" of similar political beliefs, though these are unofficial and as such don't have a central leadership. Candidates for the Senate must be at least 23 years old and must have completed their 2-year military service. The Aetolian Senate is composed of 600 Senators.

The executive branch of the Aetolian Republic is formed as a consensus government. The Senate appoints the cabinet from among its own members, and the Prime Minister, acting as both the head of state and the head of government, is chosen by the elected cabinet members. According to the Constitution of the Republic, the cabinet is suboordinate to the Senate which in turn represents the People's Will, and as such holds no veto power in the legislative process. This can only change in times of national crisis or war. Both the cabinet and the Senate serve 4-year terms. The current Prime Minister is Leonidas Stavridis, who follows a social democratic agenda and was elected in 2018.

In regards to the judicial branch, the supreme court of the Republic is the Court of Cassation, or Supreme Court. The members of the Court of Cassation are appointed by the Senate and on paper serve for life, but are required by law to retire at 70 years of age. The Council of State is the supreme administrative court of Aetolia, and led by its President, which is appointed by the Senate.
