The first consists of the Empress, who isalone in her dignity except when, as hashappened, on some rare occassions, twoPrincesses have shared the imperial throne.The second rank is unhmited as to number;and it is from these ladies that, in case of thedeath of the Empress, the Emperor com-monly chooses her successor. The thirdrank is filled up as the taste of the Emperormay direct, and it is rarely that the ladies ofthis grade ever succeed to the lofty dignityof the throne. Imposing Ceremonies. To the wedding of the Empress alone arereserved the courtly ceremonials which gracethe imperial marriage. These ceremoniesare ten in number. First comes an edictannouncing the intended marriage. TheBoard of Ceremonies next proclaims the factthroughout the empire, and having consultedthe Imperial astronomers as to the choice ofa fortunate day for sending the customarypresents to ^he bride-elect, prepares for theoccasion ten horses with accoutrements, tencuirasses, a hundred pieces of silk and two

To the Boardof Rites belongs the duty of preparing agolden tablet and a golden seal on which thescholars of the Hanlin College inscribe thenecessary decrees relating to the marriage. Armed with these imperial pledges aPresident of the Board invites the imperialorder for the presentation of the gifts. Whenthis has been received, the officials, at earlydawn on the day appointed, place a table inthe hall of Great Harmony for the recep-tion of the imperial seal, while others setout a pavilion ornamented with dragons, inwhich _the cuirasses, the silks and the clothsare reverently deposited.
