Downtown, Halifax, Nova Scotia. The Dominion Building, seen here in a view from Ondaatje Court, is a registered heritage property that was built in 1865 to an Italianate design by architects David Stirling and William Hay, and originally housed a number of institutions of the colonial (later national) government, such as the headquarters of the Nova Scotia Railway as well as Halifax's post office and customs house. Today it's the home of the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, which was founded in 1908 as the Nova Scotia Museum of Fine Arts, and for many years bounced around a succession of small, cramped temporary spaces before moving into this building as well as two storeys of the adjacent Provincial Building, in 1988 and 1998 respectively. Since 2006, the Gallery has also operated a satellite location in Yarmouth (you saw that earlier in this album). As ever, the Gallery's charge is to acquaint Nova Scotians with their own identity through the display of historic and contemporary art from the province, as well as to broaden their horizons with works from other parts of the country and world. |
