Summary
| Description | A slightly zoomed shot of Cabot Tower atop Signal Hill in St John's. We had an option to drive up to it, after a thorough soaking getting to our car but we decided to pass as we could not get down and explore the tower due to the heavy rain. We had been seeing this tower in bright sunshine throughout our stay in St. John's and had decided to leave it for the last day, checking out the outstation attractions instead. Sadly, that was not to be, due to these rains, made worse with high winds due to which the rain was falling in waves and at an angle. Construction on Cabot Tower began in 1897 to commemorate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897 and the 400th anniversary of John Cabot's landfall in 1497. The building was declared officially open in 1900. The practical uses of the building were flag mast signalling, and a Marconi wireless station which has since been moved to St. John's International Airport. On 12 December 1901, the first transatlantic wireless transmission was received here by Guglielmo Marconi in an abandoned fever and diphtheria hospital, which has since been destroyed by fire.
