Etymology

The name Muhegurun is a contraction of Oegun word meaning "Round country", possibly due to to being compared to the moon (the word Muheren meant moon as well). The name was given by Giyahaci during his foundation of the Sanggiyan Gioro dynasty, with his intent to conquer the world. In the past, it was also called Oegun-gurun after the Oegun, the dominant ethnic group in the country.
