The KHŽ Class 400 is a electric locomotive built in Holynia between 1971 and 1982. Known for its robust design and reliability, it has become one of the most widely used locomotives in the Holynian rail network, with over 1,000 units produced during its manufacturing run. The Class 400 remains in active service today, primarily with Kráľovské Holynské Železnice, where it continues to handle both freight and passenger operations. Holyn Rail Freight purchased a number of locomotives in the early 2000s and operates them across their network.

Design

The Class 400 was developed to meet the growing demands of Holynia's electrified railway network, which operates on a 25 kV 50 Hz overhead electrification system. Older locomotive designs were not ordered in sufficient numbers and capacity issues meant longer trains were needed. This necessitated higher tractive effort.

The locomotive was designed to operate efficiently in both high-speed passenger services and heavy freight duties, a testament to its versatility. Its maximum speed of 135 km/h and a continuous power output of 4,000 kW made it an improvement over previous generations.

Production

From 1971 to 1982, the Class 400 was manufactured at the Masovia Locomotive Works, located in Slatnik. Its large production run—exceeding 1,000 units—ensured that it became the backbone of Holynia's electrified rail operations.

The locomotives were distributed across the country's rail network and served on a wide range of routes, from mountainous freight corridors to high-speed intercity services. Their flexibility and reliability earned them a reputation as workhorses of the Holynian railway system.

History

Following its introduction, the Class 400 became a symbol of Holynia's modernization efforts in rail transport. Its capability to handle both freight and passenger services efficiently made it invaluable for the Holynian State Railways.

Although newer locomotive classes have since entered service, the Class 400 has undergone multiple upgrades to extend its operational lifespan.

Today, a significant portion of the Class 400 fleet remains active, primarily handling InterCity, InterRegio passenger and cargo services. A number were purchased by Holyn Rail Freight, where they operate express intermodal trains. A few locomotives have been retired and preserved in railway museums.
