The Maldanian Revolution was an armed revolt which occured between 1435 and 1452. The Maldanian Coalition defeated the Sebrenskiyan Empire, winning its independence and kicking off a civil war for control of the territory.
The revolt was brought by increasing poverty in Maldania - Maldanian entities were beginning to feel starved by the Sebrenskiyans, who lived lavishly compared to the rest of the empire. Though other regions of the empire felt benefits from Sebrenskiyan wealth, Maldanians rarely recieved any benefits and often had large-scale famines due to lack of funds to grow food.
Maldanian nobility officially protested in 1433, after a fifth harvest failure in a row, as well as rampant disease affecting livestock. The Sebrenskiyan Crown, Vitomir Gavrilović, provided 4 months of food aid, before cutting it off abruptly.
In late 1434, Kyustendil issued a call to arms against the Sebrenskiyans, who had allegedly removed extra food stores from the first successful harvest in six years. The Sebrenskiyans learned of the call to arms, and began the conflict with the Siege of Kyustendil.
Hostilities begin
In early 1435, Sebrenskiyan troops surprised the rebelling city of Kyustendil with a siege. This resulted in a three month long siege, in which the Kyustendil rebels nearly surrendered - Kuzman Georgiev writes, "The condition of our rebellion hangs onto a thread, our city is shattered. We will be forced to surrender before the summer if we are not relieved."
As Sebrenskiyan reinforcements were dispatched from Pancevo, a single messenger was able to escape the siege. This messenger, known only as the Savior of Maldania, was able to get to the city of Pliska - who was also raising arms. Pliskan cavalry arrived days after Sebrenskiyans stormed the city of Kyustendil.
Kyustendil's defences inside of the city were harsh, and Sebrenskiyan reinforcements promised never arrived. Sebrenskiya's situation worsened when they mistook the Pliskan cavalry as reinforcements - failing to attack them until they had reached outside encampments. This chaotic attack resulted in Pliskan troops storming the city behind the Sebrenskiyans, overrunning them and rescuing the Kyustendil rebels.
As the Pliskan Cavalry rescued the Kyustendil revolt, the city of Prosi accidentally stumbled on the Sebrenskiyan reinforcements and attacked them. The Sebrenskiyans, not expecting an attack, retreated north to the city of Velingrad. Prosi's troops followed, and were attacked by Velingrad and Sebrenskiyan troops just south of the city. Prosi's troops retreated quickly, and were not pursued.
Enjoying initial victories against the Sebrenskiyan military, Kyustendil and Pliska formally allied.
