Oxar is a planet in the Sal system, the only one known to be habitable and inhabited, and the third one from the Sun.
Oxar is home to a sophisticated and expansive human civilization, which has left significant traces of its existence across much of its planetary surface in various forms, ranging from settlement to resource extraction to inadvertent pollution. It is estimated that Oxar is inhabited by around 5 billion humans, organized into a handful of distinct civilizations, a number of diverse cultures, or dozens of sovereign states.
Etymology
The name 'Oxar' is derived from Literary Vitrian oksar, which in turn comes from the Sepcan-language term ok-sar, meaning 'under the sun', used by Sepcan and the greatly Sepcan-influenced Vitrian literature as a term for the world, and soon the planet. Ok-sar has further ancient origins in Sepcan texts and is believed by scholars to be derived from Proto-Roscanic roots *hwak 'below' and *tsyar 'shine'.
Podslynitsia is etymologically identical but used in a very different context.
Human geography
Oxar's land area is conventionally divided into several continents based on a mixture of largely arbitrary geographical and cultural considerations. They include the following:
