The Royal Glasic Air Force or RGAF (Glasic: tAerfhórsa ríoga de Tír Glas - ARTG) is the air force of Tír Glas. It is responsible for the aerial defence Tír Glas, its interests and the wider Commonwealth. The Royal Glasic Air Force is one of three branches under the Crown within the unified Glasic Defence Force. As of 2019 the Royal Glasic Air Force consists of some 101,250 regular personnel and 33,750 reservists, supported by around 5,000 civilian staff and contractors. It maintains a fighting force of some 1,150 fast jets and around 50 remotely piloted aircraft.

The Royal Glasic Air Force is responsible for most aircraft operations of the Glasic Defence Force, notable exceptions being the joint formations for training aircraft and the joint helicopter force. The RGAF along with the other members of the VDC is responsible for the entirety of airspace over central Vinya after the destruction of the Vyzhvan air force during the conflict of 2019. The RGAF is also responsible for the majority of search and rescue / aeromedical evacuation aircraft within Tír Glas, providing aircrew and maintenance to the mainly locally funded aircraft.

The RGAF can trace its history back to the Casaterran conflicts of the early 20th century, as an observer to events unfolding in Casaterra the recently reformed armed forces of Tír Glas took great interest in this novel new way to wage warfare. By 1915 a relatively small cadre of aircraft had been organised into a rudimentary air force. With the end of hostilities in Casaterra large amounts of war-surplus became available which the Glasic government eagerly purchased. On the 12th of May 1919 the Glasic Air Force officially came into being.

Currently the RGAF consists of several 'components', these are the: Assault Component (Comhpháirt Ionsaithe), Support Component (Comhpháirt Tacaíocht), Transport Component (Comhpháirt Iompair), Training Component (Comhpháirt Oiliúna) and the Naval Component (Comhpháirt Chabhlaigh). Former components include the Fighter Component (1922-1984), Bomber Component (1950-2014) and Coastal Component (1919-1950).

History

Origins

Starting in 1915 with the formation of the Glasic Air Corps the earliest years of what is now the RGAF were relatively chaotic given the rapid pace of evolution seen in aircraft of the time. By 1918 a basic framework of requirements had been drafted and an official air force proposed to the war ministry and in 1919 the Glasic Air Force came into being.

The Naval Component of the RGAF also known as the Naval Air Arm (Lámh Aeir Cabhlaigh) is the branch of the air force responsible for the Royal Glasic Navy's fixed and rotary-wing aircraft. Crewed by a mix of navy and air force personnel the NAA operate Goshawks off of the Navy's Cerys-class aviation support ships as well as providing the Navy's helicopter fleet in the form of the Wildcat and Merlin multi-role helicopters.
