General elections were held in Vierzland on Saturday 14 January 2017 to elect all 745 members of the Federal Assembly. The incumbent government of Kaspar Vahl and his National Democratic Party held a 392-seat majority as a result of its landslide victory in the 2012 elections.

In the run-up to the election, most opinion polling projected the NDP capturing a plurality of seats. The results of the election saw the NDP losing its majority with 44.6% of the vote and a loss of 60 seats, and both the Democratic Labour Party and the Centre Party gaining 35 and 36 seats respectively. The right-wing Conservative People's Party and Royalists lost 12 and 15 seats respectively, while the newly-formed Worker-Farmer Green Party gained 16 seats with 2.1% of the vote.

The new representatives took office on 14 February 2017. Coalition negotiations lasted until 2 March, when the New Right Coalition ("Neue Rechte Koalition") was announced consisting of the NDP, VZP, and KVP. Vahl was reinstated as chancellor, and VZP and KVP party leaders Klemens Brandt and Paulina Krehl were made deputy chancellors.
