General elections were held in Vierzland on Saturday 14 January 2012 to elect all 745 members of the Federal Assembly.

After the resignation of Chancellor Paul Bachmeier as chairman of the Democratic Labour Party, Erhardt Preisner led the DAP to victory in the 2010 election, securing a narrow majority of 377 seats. His tenure was onset by low approval ratings amid a recession the aftermath of the 2010 Bertenau bombings. His government lost a vote of no confidence in the Federal Assembly in November 2011, and a general election was set for January 2012.

The DAP was faring poorly in the polls and its main competitor, the right-wing National Democratic Party, was experiencing a rapid rise after the election of assemblyman Kaspar Vahl as its leader. Polls predicted a narrow majority or plurality win for the NDP. On election day, the NDP won in a landslide victory, securing a 392-seat majority and surprising political experts, officials, and the media. On 16 February 2012, Vahl was elected chancellor, forming the first Vahl cabinet.
