Karoly III Esterházy (Karoly Filip Miklós Patrik Adolf Esterházy; born 17 October 1960), is the current King of Granzery and head of the House of Esterházy.
Karoly III was born in Hűségesvár as the second child of István Viktor Esterházy and Sophie of Khevenhüller-Metsch, he was privately educated at home. His grandfather at the time of his birth was King József Kazimír, who had been placed on the throne following the Great War, by the Vierz Empire. His father became the king in 1968, when József Kazimír died of a sudden stroke at the age of 62, while Karoly III was 8 years old. During the reign of his father István Viktor, he spent large portions of time in Vierzland with his father, becoming fluent in Vierz over the course of his teenage years.
As the Luepolan War began, the reign of his father became increasingly more unpopular, and during the protests of the early 1980s he spent a significant amount of time in secret in the alpine palace of the family, as it was feared that rioters would storm the palace. In his later memoirs he stated that during period he felt increasingly isolated from the rest of the royal family, and developed a sympathy for the anti-Vierz and anti-government protesters.
After the Luepolan War ended in disgrace for both Vierzland and North Granzery, István Viktor abdicated from the throne, and Karoly was crowned on the 25th September 1985, becoming the King of Granzery, at the young age of 25. Shortly after ascending to the throne Karoly began the process of reducing Vierz influence on the Granzerian government, including snubbing the the Reichskommisariat in Granzery and pursuing closer relations with the western powers. This eventually culminated in a series of dialogues between Karoly and his cabinet, and the South Granzerian government, resulting in the Granzerian Compromise on the 6th of September 1986, and the re-uninfication of Granzery.
As part of the compromise, Karoly abandoned much of his power over the state, relegated to a figurehead role at the head of a new Granzerian constitutional monarchy.
