A presidential election was held in Santa Rosa on 20 April 1986, with a second round on 4 May. Incumbent president Raul Romero was re-elected, securing a second new four-year term. Nevertheless, he did not manage to obtain the majority of valid votes in the first round; this led the presidential election to a second round, which Romero won with 3.72 million votes (57.7% of the total).
