The People's Council (ThG)(Fēþisc: Þēoda Gemōt), also known as the Lord's Council, Popular Assembly, or the National Assembly, is the aggregated upper house of the Federated Fire Territories. The Council comprises the 22 Realm Councils elected representatives from the 22 shires/states within Fyrland.

Role

Serving at the people's pleasure, the 22 Realm Councils collectively appoint elected members to the Council of Shires (GoS), Council of Five (GoF), and Head of Government. Individually, they appoint elected members to Shire Governorships and form the legislative branches for their constituent states. Members of the People's Council are titled Elected Lord of the Realm (Fēþisc: Cēs-Ēþelweard), which is a position given upon election by the enfranchised populous. All Realm Councils convene to form the upper house of the Federated Fire Territories, which is then collectively called the People's Council. This aggregated body forms the pool from which the executive branches can recruit.

Excluding the chair, the People's Council seats 577 Elected Lords of the Realm. Lords of the Realm are beholden to, represent, and implement the socio-political will of their constituents. The Head of government, the Right Fire Lord (Fēþisc: Riht-Fȳrdomne), chairs the assembly when all 22 Realm Councils convene.

Composition

The enfranchised popular vote selects representatives for the People's Council, which is not subject to Head of state approval, unlike some other offices within Fyrland.

Historically, the Crown chaired the aggregated Council, which heretofore presented a Council of the Crown's Lords. Formally, the People's Council is the Lord's Council, which requires members to hold the title of "Lord". However, the Right Fire Lord, as Hand of the Crown, is assumed to hold a peerage already. Today all Realm Councillors are given this title shortly after appointment.
