He is the only child of Sawa Tanosuke and Asano Waka, and he grew up in a lowe-middle class family. Despite often having average to sometimes even lackluster grades, he excelled at sports, namely football, during Primary School. As a result, he was accepted into the Povlsen Sports Academy, a prestigious secondary school for some of Indian Empire's best athletes.
