Rommel was born in Könlenz in 1931, where he also spent his childhood. From 1942 to 1948 he attended the ''Olaf-Mutsgut-Regelschule'' in Könlenz. He received average grades, but displayed a keen interest in literature, photography, and film from a young age, and taught himself all aspects of film production and directing after graduating. After graduating, he worked as a photographer for the magazine ''ThemenHeute'' between 1948 and 1954. Between 1954 and 1956 he produced six short films for the television network BRF 1. With his short films, Rommel earned a total of 315,000 BS. So he found the finances to begin making his first feature film, ''[[Die Mörder in uns]]'' (1957). ''Die Mörder in uns'' was a commercial failure, but garnered several positive reviews upon release.

Rommel was born in Könlenz in 1931, where he also spent his childhood. From 1942 to 1948 he attended the Olaf-Mutsgut-Regelschule in Könlenz. He received average grades, but displayed a keen interest in literature, photography, and film from a young age, and taught himself all aspects of film production and directing after graduating. After graduating, he worked for the BRF until 1957. Rommel also shot a few reports for the BRF. With the money he earned, Rommel financed his first feature film, The Murderers in Us.
