It is the most populous and the {{wp|capital city}} of the [[Provinces of Soravia|Ludoy Islands]]. Its cityscapes include some of the most well-preserved {{wp|medieval architecture}} in [[Soravia]], including {{wp|castle|Eryksborg Castle}} and {{wp|Uvdal Stave Church|Kupaske Stave Church}}, and its architecture has been invariably shaped by intermittent {{wp|Norse|Ejderic}}, [[Sadamic League|Sadamic]] and [[Soravia|Soravian]] rule.
According to legend, the city was founded by Erik Ansgarson in 851 to be the primary {{wp|fishing|fishing town}} for his detachment of men sailing the Perovo. [[Eleanora of Caldia]]'s [[Caldia#The túatha|Uí Mealla clan]] briefly held the city, but after the execution of [[Flaithbertach Uí Mealla]] by [[Moimir of Dulat|Moimir the Kneebringer]]'s armies of [[Duchy of Pavatria|Pavatria]], the city fell back under Ejderic control. After the fall of the [[First North Sea Empire]] and its various successor states, the city became ''{{wp|de facto}}'' governed by its {{wp|merchants|mercantile elite}}, who operated in the form of an {{wp|guild|early guild}} or {{wp|confraternity}}. The city, whose sovereignty became threatened by Pavatrian expansion, joined the [[Maritime Guild]] in 1228. The Guild's navy protected the city from invasion, and in turn the city provided it with near complete control over trade in the Perovo.
As the Guild dwindled in power towards the {{wp|Late Middle Ages}}, its ability to protect its westernmost cities diminished. Having already suffered minor setbacks in north-central [[Euclea]]. In 1409, {{wp|Burgomaster}} [[Hallar the Frail]] travelled to [[Muuli]] as the city's {{wp|envoy}}, pleading for a raised land and naval force to defend the city. The Guild ultimately decided against it, and Hallar remained in Muuli as [[Siege of Eryksborg (1410)|Pavatria sieged and occupied Eryksborg in 1410]]. The [[Third North Sea Empire]] annexed the city in 1462, but its swift decline saw the city once more plunged into mercantile administration in 1489.
