Melynkalna, officially the People's Republic of Melynkalna, is a small landlocked country located within the Messenia, bordering Lecia and X to the south, X to the east, X to the northeast, X to the northwest and X to the west. Located largely in the Something Mountains, much of the country's population of 4 million is concentrated in its capital of Jukniškė and the surrounding valley.
---stuff about history, probably spends some time as an independent duchy and is heavily pushed around by larger neighbours, eventually syndicalists stage a revolution to form the people's republic, maybe as part of the independence struggle and potentially some kind of slightly more authoritarian period in like the 60s and 70s? idk---
Melynkalna is governed according to the principles of syndicalism and as such direct democratic and sectoral trade unions play a significant role both in political and economic decision making under a nonpartisan political system. While one of the poorer countries in Messenia with a nominal GDP per capital of $12,034, Melynkalna's education and healthcare systems have frequently featured very highly on international rankings and the country's liberalisation has led to significant development of the tertiary sector, especially in tourism and related industries.
Government and politics notes
- Legislature is the Workers' Congress which is a unicameral body of 160 members - 96 of these are elected by the sectoral trade unions that dominate politics within the country, 16 are elected by "fraternal socialist organisations" - definitely one of these is a youth league, maybe also an organisation representing the small co-operative private sector and a cultural organisation and maybe a few religious representatives, and 64 are directly elected localised representatives independent of trade unions.
- Political parties are officially outlawed but factions clearly exist and ideological disputes over the nature of syndicalism drive a lot of the direct elections and the specific unions tend to lean towards specific interpretations - while candidates have to pledge to uphold the socialist values of the state there is not too much of a vetting process.
- The Premier is directly elected by the populace alongside the Workers' Congress to serve as the head of state and government and appoints a nine-member Presidium to help them with governance. The Workers' Congress can pass a motion of no confidence in the Premier and thus dissolve itself and call new elections at any point.
