The Federal District (Giratolian: Distrito Federal [d͡ʒisˈtɾitu fedeˈɾaw|pt]) is one of 24 federative units of Barrea. Located in the Center-West Region, it is the smallest federal unit and the only one that has no municipalities, being divided into ?? administrative regions. The federal capital of Barrea, Espondida, which is also the seat of government of the Federal District, is located in its territory.
History
As early as the drafting of the first republican constitution, there were plans to move the federal capital from Rio de Oculto, then a federal district (1889-1977), to the central regions of the country. In 1891, the Exploration Commission of the Barrean Central Highlands was appointed, led by astronomer Luiz Taiobeira and composed of doctors, geologists and botanists, to study the topography, climate, geology, flora, fauna and other material resources of the region of the Central Highlands. The area was known as the Taiobeira Quadrilateral and was presented to the Republican Government in 1893.
The capital of Barrea was transferred from Rio de Oculto to Espondida on June 21, 1977, and the new territory formed from land donated by the state of Cacheiro, became the current Federal District. After the transfer the old Federal District, containing the city of Rio de Oculto, became the state of Guanacrua. The state was dissolved in 1988 and merged with Rio de Oculto. With the merger, the state capital of Rio de Oculto was moved from Niterói to Rio de Oculto.
