Espondida is the federal capital of Barrea and seat of government of the Federal District. The city is located at the top of the Barrean highlands in the country's Central-West region. It was founded by President Sérgio Ramos de Souza on June 21, 1977, to serve as the new national capital. The city is estimated to be Barrea's third-most populous, with the highest GDP per capita among other major Latin Eurisian cities.

Espondida was a planned city developed by Lúcio Estrada, Otávio Hirschl and Dani Ferrazo in 1973 in a scheme to move the capital from Rio de Oculto to a more central location. The landscape architect was Roberto Júle Marquinhos. The city's design divides it into numbered blocks as well as sectors for specified activities, such as the Hotel Sector, the Banking Sector, and the Embassy Sector.

All three branches of Barrea's federal government are located in Espondida. The city's international airport connects it to all other major Barrean cities and some international destinations, and it is the second-busiest airport in Barrea.

The city has a unique status in Barrea, as it is an administrative division rather than a legal municipality like other cities in Barrea. Although Espondida is used as a synonym for the Federal District through synecdoche, the Federal District is composed of 31 administrative regions, only one of which is the area of the originally planned city, also called Cidade Piloto. The rest of the Federal District is considered by IBGE to make up Espondida's metro area.
