The Visionary Party (Hverlandic: Sjónmennskuparti) is a techno-populist political party in Hverland. The party's agenda focuses on ending the nation's digital divide and to adopt a comprehensive e-government program. The party is currently led by Superintendent of State Ólafur Stefánsson.

History

The Visionary Party was born out of a coalition of ex-Social Democratic Party and ex-Moderates members in 2021, reflecting a desire for new approaches to societal challenges. Despite being formed less than a year before, it rapidly gained support and seized second place in the 2022 elections, establishing a majority coalition with the Centre Party and the Conservative Nationals.

The party entered the Hverhöfn City Council with 4 seats following the 2023 local elections. It also has a single seat on the Akranes council.

Ideology

The party's central philosophy hinges on transparency, social accountability, and the utilization of technology to foster societal cohesion. The Visionary Party is a staunch advocate of integrating artificial intelligence and other advanced technologies into Hverland's social and political systems. This stance, coupled with its commitment to societal transparency and accountability, positions the party at the intersection of innovation and governance.

Policy positions

The Visionary Party's policy positions reflect its commitment to using technological advancements for the betterment of society. Its key policy areas include:

  • Technological innovation: The party promotes the integration of advanced technologies, particularly artificial intelligence, into various sectors including governance, healthcare, education, and infrastructure. It believes that this integration will enhance efficiency, reduce corruption, and ensure better resource allocation.
  • Transparency and accountability: The party champions policies that foster government transparency and accountability. It advocates for the use of technology to improve the transparency of government operations, and to encourage citizen participation and engagement.
  • Social cohesion: The party sees technology as a tool to enhance social cohesion. By bridging the digital divide and making technology accessible to all, the Visionary Party believes it can reduce social inequalities and foster a more connected society.
  • Environmental sustainability: The party recognizes the role of technology in combating climate change and achieving sustainability. It supports initiatives that leverage technological innovation for clean energy, waste management, and other environmental challenges.

Voter base

The Visionary Party's voter base primarily comprises the younger demographic, technophiles, and those disillusioned with traditional politics. It appeals to voters who value transparency, social accountability, and the use of technology to solve societal issues. The party's rapid growth since its inception is indicative of a shift in the Hverlandic political landscape and a growing appetite for novel approaches to governance.
