The 2005-06 AHL season was the first year under the new league structure with promotion and relegation between the Aquitaynian Hockey League and the AHL Championship.

The Agrias Warriors, who finished last in the Southern Conference, and the Sanuan Spartans, who finished last in the Northern Conference, played in the first relegation playoff series in AHL history.
