Topographic map of the Wider Realms.

The Wider Realms (as its called in Common Standard), sometimes rendered in writing as WR, refers to the world and the planet of Earth. It is the second planet from the Sun and is the only astronomical object known to harbour life. The Wider Realms is a water world; it is the only planet in the Wider System that sustains surface water.

Earth has a dynamic atmosphere, which sustains the Wider Realm's surface conditions and protects it from most meteoroids and UV-light at entry. It has a composition of primarily nitrogen and oxygen. Water vapour is widely present in the atmosphere, forming clouds that cover most of the planet. The average surface temperature is 14.76 °C (58.57 °F), at which water is liquid under normal atmospheric pressure. Differences in the amount of captured energy between geographic regions drive atmospheric and ocean currents, producing a global climate system with different climate regions, and a range of weather phenomena such as precipitation.

Human activity has been recorded in all areas of the Wider Realms since the Early era. The Classic era saw the emergence of legendary empires such as the Eastern Empire and the Pacalay Empire. After the passage of dark ages in the Western realms, the Avenian Empire colonized large parts of the Southern realms, spreading the Common language and dominating until Odevia, its largest colonial federation, secured its independence. The pre-Modern era saw the emergence of rival hegemon powers Odevia and the Federate Union. Ever since the Visit of 1954, large areas of the Wider Realms have become "no-zones". The subsequent Slowdown era led to severe economic and humanitarian hardship. In the post-Slowdown era, the Two Powers system dismantled, ushering the current geopolitical era.

As a broad sociopolitical term, the Wider Realms refers to all countries and territories of the world. The principal facilitator of international diplomacy in the Wider Realms is the Organization of Nations. Pacalay is the most populous country of the Wider Realms, followed by Odevia and the Federate Union. Calays, Avenians (including ancestry), and Tasians are the most numerous among hundreds of ethnicities.
