After the execution of Supreme Leader Régis Lemaigre by the forces of General Léonard Joubert, the country quickly spiralled into widespread disorder. Military commanders carved parts of the country up amongst themselves, fighting with each other and the central government in Antilet for control of the country. The '''Altaian demon worm''' is a legendary species of worm thought to inhabit the steppes and deserts of Altaia. According to local legends, it can grow well in excess of 10 metres and is highly aggressive. The solitary animal is said to ambush anything that enters its nesting sites, which can span several hundred metres in every direction. Altaian nomads are highly suspicious of areas rumoured to be the dwelling places for the animal.

Due to the lack of access to Altaia to outsiders, it has not been possible to prove or disprove the existence of the creature. Researchers speculate that if it exists, it may be a member of the class Namanereidinae and probably originated in the great sea south of Altaia many millions of years ago and eventually found its way onto land, becoming solely terrestrial. Access to large prey such as wild horses, camels and gazelle would of eventually allowed it to grow to much larger sizes then in the sea, which is comparatively devoid of large fauna.
They are by far the largest combatant warships of the Navy, second only to the service's aircraft carrier classes.

The Bourgougian Civil War (25 August 1987 – 12 May 2003) was an intense military conflict which took place in Bourgougia from 1987 to 2003. It began following Bourgougia's defeat to Carloso and Agostinia in the Bourgougian Blitz. After the execution of Supreme Leader Régis Lemaigre by the forces of General Léonard Joubert, the country quickly spiralled into widespread disorder. Military commanders carved parts of the country up amongst themselves, fighting with each other and the central government in Antilet for control of the country. In the early 1990s, the virulently anti-communist and revanchist Récompense movement gained strength, as well as more moderate democratic forces known as L'Intransigeant. The leader of Récompense, a former army colonel named Otes Leclair, declared himself President of Bourgougia. Amidst widespread fighting and famine, over five million Bourgougian civilians were killed. Moderate, social democratic forces eventually prevailed in 2003, seizing control of Antilet.

Despite its desire to retake Victory and its glorification of Synarchrist Bourgougia, the Carlosian government supported Récompense until 2001, when Michael Gallagher became President.
