Vance was on stage giving a speech, joined by United States Senator Josh Hawley, when he was fatally shot by Anthony Schafer, a Californian nationalist. Secret Service officials immediately rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead 17 minutes after the shooting; Ron DeSantis was quickly sworn in as president at 4:12 p.m., less than an hour after the attack.
