On March 12, 2032, JD Vance, the 48th president of the United States, was assassinated while at a rally at Scioto Audubon Metro Park in Columbus, Ohio. Vance was on stage giving a speech, joined by United States Senator Josh Hawley, when he was fatally shot by Anthony Schafer, a Californian nationalist. Secret Service officials immediately rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead 17 minutes after the shooting; Ron DeSantis was quickly sworn in as president at 4:12 p.m., less than an hour after the attack.
After the assassination, Schafer was apprehended by local police officials and charged with first-degree murder under Ohio law. He was found guilty in June 2032 and was given the death penalty.
