The War of Broken Chains (Faldarunic: ᛋᛐᚱᛁᚧ ᛆᚠ ᛒᚱᚮᛐᛁᚿᚿ ᚴᛂᚧᛁᚢᚱ, tr. Stríð af Brotinn Keðjur) also known to some historians as the First Faldarunic Civil War (Faldarunic: ᛒᚮᚱᚵᛆᚱᛆᛋᛐᛦᚱᛁᚯᛚᛑ ᚠᛦᚱᛋᛐᛆ ᚡᛆᛚᛑᛆᛋᚱᚢᚿ, tr. Borgarastyrjöld Fyrsta Valdasruni) was a civil war in Faldarun, lasting from May 5th 1867 until November 11th 1871. The conflict saw the Free Jarldoms, an alliance of secessionist rebel lords united under the charismatic self-proclaimed High King Erlendur Sigurdsson, fight against the Faldarunic Empire and the Imperial loyalists, under Emperor Aleksander I.
The immediate cause of the war, and the revolt/secession of the southern Jarldoms, was the suggestion by Aleksander to phase out slavery in his own demesne. Many Jarls, not least those in the cotton-farming and agricultural regions such as Hárland and Langhús, saw this as a precursor to a realm-wide ban on slavery. In reality, Aleksander had no such plans, however the southern Jarls gradually feared more and more that their property would be confiscated, and so began to plan for a possible conflict. Additionally, the Marcher-Lords of Nordehuken - at this point still self-governing - continued to desire the independence they lost roughly fifty years prior.
