The Brightburg Maritime Academy is a Radictistani institution for training merchant marine officers located outside the city of Brightburg, Erdwoodsur. It is one of two institutions funded by the national government for the purpose of training young men and women as merchant mariners and naval reservists. All graduates leave fully qualified and accredited to work as either deck or engineering officers on Radictistani-flagged ships. The institution and its graduates maintain a fierce rivalry with Kalanach Maritime Academy.
Admissions
Brightburg Maritime Academy admits prospective cadets based on a competitive applications system. In some years there are as many as seven applicants for each place.
Curriculum
The full training and education course lasts four years. All cadets undergo either the Deck Track or the Engineering Track. Deck Track cadets focus on skills related to the work of a ship's deck department including navigation, cargo handling, and maritime communications. Engineering Track cadets follow an intensive study of ships' engines and other systems.
All cadets spend parts of their second and third years onboard Radictistani-flagged merchant ships. The usual practice is to have one deck cadet and one engineering cadet paired on a single ship.
Upon completing their educational track and passing their final examinations, graduating cadets receive an unlimited license as Third Officer or Third Assistant Engineer in addition to a Bachelor of Science degree and a commission as a Lieutenant in the Royal Naval Reserve.
Service requirements
Graduates of both nationally-funded academies are required to maintain their merchant marine officer's credentials for at least eight years. This is usually accomplished by working as watchstanding officers on Radictistani merchant ships. Graduates are also required to serve in the Royal Naval Reserve for at least eight years.
