Sebastyan Thomas Aldham is a Kouralian explorer, adventurer and soldier who gained renown for his role in the 2014 discovery and liberation of the Skien of Cardi within The Great Civilisation, the discovery of the location of the Hundred Worlds of Lord Atum, and the defeat and containment of the monster known as the Eater of Breath.

Childhood

Sebastyan grew up as the son of a land-owner in Bagnone south of the channel. Despite an original wealth and a great deal more land to the family name, the Republican Revolution had resulted in more of an aristocratic reputation brought down to one of a multitude of middle class farmers and others. It was with this upbringing that first Sebastyan and then eleven years later his sister Andreina developed fieldcraft and outdoors skills through traditional countryside past-times like shooting.

As a child Sebastyan attended Bagnone Combined School, and later Fyletto secondary school but, aside from artistic talent, did not demonstrate any particular academic aptitude. He did, however, demonstrate skill in the school's junior officer training corps and was rapidly promoted to Cadet Exon and then Cadet Serjeant when the Millenial war broke out.

Early Life

Millennial War

Within weeks of the civil war breaking out, Sebastyan left home with his father's permission to attend the New Royal Officer Academy at Matera. There his continued demonstration of aptitude in military fieldcraft and leadership resulted in his early commission as a Cadet-Ensign in April of 2000, and then served as a staff assistant to senior officers until his eighteenth birthday whereupon he was elevated to 'Ensign' and assigned as a second-in-command of the Scout Troop of the 3rd Cefalyæ Fusiliers in December 2000 due to a lack of troop commander positions.

During the Eastern Approach campaign toward Kurton Sebastyan's platoon commander, Captain Jodie Barry, was killed during battle and it fell on the as-yet untested Ensign to take command of the Scouting Troop as a fighting unit rather than its preferred role as a light screening and reconnaissance force. Due to lack of confidence in his experience, the Ensign accepted an offer by the Platoon Serjeant for him to advance with the assaulting teams and neutralise the mortars firing toward the rest of the Cohort's positions. The route selected by the Serjeant led them into a stiff defense which resulted in the majority of the assault team being killed or injured, while Aldham's fire support group needed to push down from their positions to accomplish the objectives and relieve the pressure on the rest of the troop.

Because of the impact this event had on the unit, the Troop was redistributed to make up numbers in other troops, and Sebastyan was reassigned to a position within the Cohort's staff.

Kurton City Watch

Following the conclusion of the war and restitution of power to the Crown, Sebastyan took a demobilisation package guaranteeing employment with a territorial Watch, and was despatched to Kurton's Central and Borough Capital District Watch where he was attested in November of 2001. Following completion of his probation, Sebastyan continued his career in the newly-renamed Royal Estates Watch. This continued through Section, Criminal Investigation Department, Proactive Investigations, and a two-year secondment to the Treasury Guard from 2010 to 2012 during which he was promoted to Vys-Exon. On his return to Kurton Sebastyan was reassigned to the Force Intelligence Office due to a surfeit of accredited investigators where, experiencing dissatisfaction with his new role, he applied for a project by the Justiciary for Culture to tour extra-terrestrial territories and document them for a tourism campaign.

Since 2005 Sebastyan had joined the Army Reserve, where he served as a Reserve Captain in a Combat Camera Detachment of the Land Transport Corps, deploying alongside peacekeepers for 6 months in 2007.

Exploration

The aim of the Justiciary of Culture's programme was described as sending Kouralian explorers out to visit, experience, and document exotic and unusual cultures and locations across the fractal world and galaxy. This was intended to incite a national spark of wanderlust, and actively combat the insular and often xenophobic attitude of many Kouralians which was seen to be limiting its advancement in the international arena.

In his capacity as a Kouralian Army Reserve Captain, Sebastyan was called to service and paid through the Justiciary of War as if it was a deployment, though he was acting as a contractor for the Justiciary of Culture. He initially travelled to the Revenant Worlds of the Great Civilisation of the C'tan in 2013 where he met and fell in with a multi-national group of adventurers and explorers, originating from nations such as Menelmacar, Malgrave, D'halbrisir, and Orussia. First they travelled on the world of Lurthir II where they explored a number of ruins and settlements in an often-hostile environment, and where one of their number - Bob - nearly caused Sebastyan to be violently violated by an amorous orc. During the exploration of Lurthir II, the group encountered a hostile alien life-form known as a 'Tsochar' which killed one of their number: Orlendo from Orussia. Subsequently the group reported this to the C'tani authorities who responded with military force.

From there the party travelled to the world of Cardi, an icy planet undergoing a C'tani terraforming process. On this planet Sebastyan was possessed by a Psychic Entity during the exploration of a ruin, which required it to be exorcised from him. While on Cardi the group of adventurers managed to enter a magically constructed location known as the Skien of Cardi, into which the native inhabitants of the world had fled before the ice-based apocalypse of the planet. There they discovered the inhabitants were trapped, and under threat from hostiles known as the 'Degenerates', and they helped fight them before escaping and bringing news of this situation to the Great Civilisation again. The C'tani began rescue operations which are estimated to be finished around 2026, and which are hoped to save at least 30,000 sapient beings.

As a result of these actions and the subsequent short fame which followed, Sebastyan was gifted a number of magical articles by the Circle of Magi along with the award of the Aleithn Firestone Award Scarab in red marble by the C'tani state. This commemorated participation in work which has saved over 30,000 lives. Due to the excessively dangerous nature of Sebastyan's explorations, he was removed from the Justiciary's travel documentation programme, but travelled to the Hundred Worlds of Lord Atum with his companions in order to continue researching and combating the threat posed by the Tsochar.

First Death

Within the Hundred Worlds they first travelled to the planet of P7C-3194 where, in a moment of ill-considered idiocy, Sebastyan revealed that he was not an adherent to the Goa'uld-mandated faith. To prevent his murder by the incensed locals, Alassë of Menelmacar pretended to escort him away to prison, but the pair were forced to return during a dust storm of fatal strength. While attempting to scale the walls back into the settlement, Sebastyan fell and suffered lethal injuries. His body was rapidly brought to the world of Delmak by the remainder of the group, where he was brought back to life by a Goa'uld Sarcophagus. During time on Delmak another of the party, Amelia Lowwe of Malgrave was enslaved by the Atumites and needed to be liberated and emancipated before they could depart. Unfortunately the neural conditioning used by the Goa'uld on their slaves has taken extensive counselling to attempt deprogramming of her imprinted subservience.

During the time on Delmak, a great deal of intelligence was discovered regarding the Atumite civilisation which linked with the attacks by System Lord Sokar on Imeriata and Malgrave. Due to the importance of this to Kouralia, Sebastyan was recommissioned full-time into the Department of Topography and Statistics of the Military Intelligence Service, and given both a salary and a tasking by the Kouralian Crown to investigate Sokar, Atum, the Tsochar, and to take whatever actions deemed necessary to protect the Royal Union from them. While it strictly-speaking occurred outside of his state employment, Sebastyan was awarded the Iron Shield Class One in recognition of the lethal injuries he suffered on P7C-3194, as his actions were undertaken in the service of Kouralia.

Second Death

The companions subsequently visited a dwarf hold on Charon for further information on the Tsochar, and the Revenant World of Menzara. Following this the party travelled to the Dreaming Citadel of Agartha where all of the group bar Alassë were captured by a battalion of Atumite soldiers after a battle in which Sun Down of the Greater Pony Herd was killed. They were then imprisoned by shipwreck on the prison world of Sheol, where they were contained by a planet-wide energy field and all inhabitants were intentionally reduced to primitive levels of technology to allow Atumite military forces to field-test combat equipment.

This detention lasted roughly three years, during which Sebastyan and his companions formed a small group of resistant and motivated exiled prisoners who banded together to protect themselves from the Atumite forces. In the last few days of their detention there, the group was assisted with a surprise shipment of their original weapons via an orbital drop. Unfortunately, due to his marksmanship and his skill with an energy-shield-bypassing phase rifle, Sebastyan was designated the priority target by the Atumite drones in the final battle they fought on the world before being rescued. This resulted in his death in combat while leading a picket to defend the group's encampment. The group was rescued from Sheol by a Necrontyr naval force along with Alassë and her ship, the Continuation of Diplomacy.

As Sebastyan was, again, legally and medically dead, he was again awarded the Iron Shield Class One even though he was subsequently resurrected. As Alassë was not military personnel and Sebastyan technically counted as a Prisoner of War, for her role in the rescue she was awarded Valour's Medal, entitling her to use the Post-Nominals 'VM'.

Shortly following this, Sebastyan separated from the Group while they travelled to Equestria, before rejoining them in a nation bordering Kouralia Hippocratia to seek a beast known as the Eater of Breath. Despite not being able to convince Hippocratian authorities to cooperate with them, the group managed to defeat the creature - believed to be associated with the Tsochar.

Third Adventure

Personal Life

Sebastyan has four living family members. His Mother, Alana and Father, Lyanyr still live on the family estate in the province of Clelia. He has a younger sister, Andreina, who was born in June of 1990 and who currently works for the Crown Adjutant Clerk Corps.

In 2003 Sebastyan entered into a companionship with Tamæra aþ’Ada, a civil engineer at the Justiciary for National Infrastructure. This broke down over different family ambitions, and the pair separated in 2009. This contributed to a decision to apply for the secondment with the Treasury Guard.

Awards

As noted above, Sebastyan is the only recorded Kouralian citizen to have clinically and legally 'fully' died twice while remaining alive. The award of an Iron Shield Class One and Bar to a living person was only approved after extensive medical, legal, and testimonial evidence before the Inter-Judiciary Chamber for the Grant of Honours, Decorations and Medals - sat upon by the Permanent Secretary of the Justiciary for War. This committee only usually hears petitions or matters relating to reform of the Kouralian honours procedure, but in this case the single service Medal Office was unable to make a decision, and the wording of the warrant for the Iron Shield Class One technically specified a limit of one issue per person.

Following the return of the group from Cardi, the wear of the Aleithn Firestone Award Scarab was approved in all military uniforms by Sebastyan Aldham.

Sebastyan was awarded the Cold Iron Shield Grade One twice for the deaths which occurred during his travels. The Grade Two award was made for his possession on Cardi by the Psychic Entity. The Valorous Irregular's shield was for his leadership of the picket defending the camp on Sheol, and his conduct while imprisoned. The Medal of the Burning Grail is issued for all service personnel who fought for the Crown in the Millennial War. The Distinguished Watch Service Medal was issued for his actions in 2009, saving two children from a burning building while on proactive patrol at night before the fire and rescue service arrived. The Millenial War Medal was for service during the Millennial War. The Irregular Service Medal was issued for his service with the Military Intelligence Service since Delmak. The General Service Medal was for his deployment as a reservist alongside peacekeepers in 2007. The Champion Shot Medal was for his participation in the Royal Shoot of 2008 and coming first for his Division.
