The Varyag KVR are the elite Stasnovan military formations under the control of the military intelligence service KVR, the Commissariat of Military Intelligence . It was the first Stasnovan special forces force, more than a decade older than its GKR (State Commissariat of Intelligence) and DVB (Directorate of Internal Security ) counterparts. The full acronym is KVR GSh (Russian: КВР ГШ) or Commissariat of Military Intelligence of the General Staff (Russian: Комиссариат военной разведки Генерального штаба) meaning Commissariat of Military Intelligence of the General Stuff (of the United Socialist Republics of Stasnov). The acronym, however, is usually shortened to just KVR (Russian: КВР) which stands for Komissariat voyennoy razvedki (Russian: Комиссариат военной разведки) (English: Commissait of Military Intelligence). The name Varyag comes from the ancient Stasnovan warrior tribe of the Varangians, who inhabited the northern parts of Stasnov during the tribal era.
History
The Varyag KVR were established in 1928, a year after the KVR itself was established. The Stavka, the Stasnovan military high command, took interest in the concept of using specially trained and equipped military forces to wage uncoventional war against the enemy, that would overcome the advantage conventional forces could face in the field of battle. Such a concept in the Stasnovan Armed Forces was pioneered by Mikhail Dragunov, the first leader of the KVR. While the KVR's mission was handling all military intelligence, particularly the collection of intelligence of military or political significance from sources outside Stasnov, Dragunov envisaged the implementation of his ideas to the Commissariat.
When he firstly asked for permission from the Stavka, he got no positive response. The top brass of the then Stasnovan military command, while understanding the importance of uncoventional warfare that was until then only seen in practice by partizans, could never see how such ideas could be implemented in the regural Stasnovan military. However, after one year of attempts, and a rumoured meating with the leader of the Stasnovan Revolution and then Premier, Vladimir Moskvin, the Stavka finally gave Dragunov its blessing, and the required recources. Dragunov formed the 337th Special Purpose Trainning Center in the outskirts of Moskvingrad, where the first Varyag soldiers, that firsly originated from the elite 2nd Guards Moskvingrad Rifle Division, were trained.
During the Second Atlasian Great War, the Varyag KVR, along with partizan fighters carried continued sabotages and ambushes against the invading Roskian forces in the Northern Vaznik Front. After the massed retreat of the Roskian military from the country due the the Stasnovan counter-attack, that eventually led to the Roskian surrender, the Varyag KVR participated in the invasion of Elesar. As Stasnovan forces ammassed on the Stasno-Elesarian border, the Varyag KVR had already started their work, sabotaging railways, bridges, fuel depots, and other assets of strategic importance. After the invasion, the Varyag continued their mission in softening the Elesarian defences and making the job for the conventional Stasnovan forces easier.
Organization and Command
The Varyag KVR are under the direct command of the Commissariat of Military Intelligence, however, they can also be subordinated to the Stavka if needed. They are organised into four operational commands, Spetsgruppas (Special Groups), each assinged to one of the four Stasnovan military districts. The Varyag of the GKR are in one Spetsgruppa while the DVB are in two. The Varyag KVR are organised into Spetsgruppa formations because they are not subordinated to the military, thus not to a military district.

Equipment
Older Varyag weaponry consisted of more streamlined, stripped-down weapons suitable for covert operations, such as the AKS-74U carbine. Modern Varyag weapons include the VSS Vintorez sniper rifle, AS Val assault rifle, SV98 sniper rifle, AK-9 assault rifle, AN-94 assault rifle, and the PP-19 Bizon submachine gun, along with older weaponry such as the AKS-74U. The Varyag KVR weaponry have recently started a standarisation programme, and their main assault rifle will be the A-545, and their standard general purpose machine gun the AEK-999.
Specialized weaponry includes the NRS-2, a survival knife with a built-in single-shot firing mechanism able to fire a 7.62x42mm SP-4 cartridge (the same used in PSS Silent Pistol), along with the RPG-16 and plastic explosives; for urban warfare scenarios, the AK-103 has also been used by Varyag groups. Similar to other modern special forces organizations, Varyag weaponry is selected by merit of stealth and reliability for special military operations, espionage, sabotage, or other covert actions.
