The New Democratic Party of Northern Ontario, led by Howard Hampton, won a majority government with 8 of the 13 seats in the legislature. The Progressive Conservative Party of Northern Ontario, led by Eric Mellilo, formed the Official Opposition. The Northern Ontario Liberal Party, led by Mike Gravelle, gained 1 seat. The populist Northern Ontario Party grew significantly in the popular vote but narrowly failed to enter the legislature.
