The strength of the Imperial Navy was not created overnight. It has been a labor of love and pain, creating the mighty interstellar and intrasystem fighting force that it exists as today. The Empire of Thrashia has always dedicated a large amount of it's resources towards defense and military spending, and the Imperial Navy is the place where a majority of that went toward.

While the Imperial Navy has grown a great deal since it's birth centuries before, its mission has largely stayed the same: to free the system space of Imperial worlds from hazards to profitable commerce, to assure the safety of Imperial worlds from attack from outside forces, and to bolster the planetary governments in times of crisis. Without the Imperial Navy the Imperial Army would not be able to effectively operate and deploy, nor would safe civilian travel between systems be guaranteed. Lines of communication are watched and protected by the Imperial Navy. It truly acts as the primary shield of the Empire as well as it's sword; for the Imperial Navy is the first tool used for projecting the strength of the Empire. It is by the stolid and faithful execution of its duties that friends and foes alike know the measure of its constituent peoples.

It should be noted that the Imperial Navy, while it does play host to both the Imperial Army and the Stormtrooper Legions, does not have a ground force of its own. Naval Troopers, while trained to a similar standard as Army Regulars, can possibly be used in such a manner in extreme circumstances, they are most definitely not meant to be used in that way. The Navy fights in space and leaves the dirty ground work to the Imperial Army. However, there are a select few special operations formations that exist beneath the aegis of the Imperial Navy's command structure, as well as guards for shipyards, stations, and orbital installations.

History

The history of the Imperial Navy began in the twilight years of the Empire, when it was still bound to the old homeworld of Mankind: the Sol system. The Imperial Navy was begun as a partnership between the Republic of Parlim and the Empire of Thrashia. The Parlimans were already an advanced, space-faring people who had made first-contact with the Empire and agreed to 'uplift' the Thrashian people into the stars by assisting with technology and construction. In a very short time the very first vessels that would become the keystones of the Imperial Navy were completed.

The Imperial Navy, also known as the Imperial Starfleet, Imperial Fleet, Imperial Battlefleet, Imperial Space Navy, or Imperial Space Service, and also informally referred to as "the Empire's long arm", is the space warfare branch of the Imperial Military of the Thrashian Empire. It quickly became the premier service branch of the Imperial Military. All species, sexes, and bio-types were allowed entry to the Fleet so long as they met the exacting standards for recruitment and training.

Due to the Empire's cloning program most of the Fleet's Star Fighter Corps, Transport and Logistics Corps, and the Maintenance Corps consist of clones. However, the clone templates are varied - allowing the majority of these sub-branches of the Fleet to operate at peak efficiency.

The Navy divides rank into Position, Line rank, and Specialist rank. Position refers to an officer's current assignment on a ship as opposed to permanent rank, and includes any honorary titles such as Baron or Warlord of the Empire, usually granted to individuals that have performed above and beyond all expectation of duty normally believed required of an officer. Officers in the position of Lieutenant and ship's Captain wear a single code cylinder with their uniforms, while flag officers wore up to four, the additional cylinders relating to their fleet responsibilities.

Line ranks are permanent ranks held by those who command bridge crews, captained ships, and flew their flags over fleets.

Specialist rank is held by personnel of the Flight, Support, and Engineering branches and broadly mirror the line ranks of the Imperial Army. Specialist officers that were promoted beyond Line ranks usually retained their honorific branch titles, according to branch. The junior ranks of specialist officers, Captain and below, had their ranks prefixed by Flight, Support, or Engineering depending on the branch they serve under. In the case of Flight Branch pilots, they also had their own positional titles: Squadron Leader, Wing Commander, and Group Captain.

TIE Squadron Leaders, normally Flight Captains, use the insignia of a captain, as a fighter squadron unit is considered the equivalent of a small-ship command. The code cylinders worn by specialist officers served purely as insignia.

Etiquette

Military courtesy is simply the display of good manners and politeness in dealing with other people. It conveys respect from both subordinate and senior to each other.

Attention/Salute

When on or off duty within a military compound, aboard a military vessel, or when in uniform all Junior Officers and Enlisted Ranks will render salutes to Senior Officers of all services. It is appropriate, though not required, to accompany the salute with a word of greeting, for example, "Good morning, sir."

How to salute onboard a vessel or station: the Enlisted or Junior Officer comes to attention, heels snapping together, and remaining in position until after the superior officer has passed.

How to salute on a planet: the Enlisted or Junior Officer comes to attention, heels snapping together, raises their right arm with hand extended to the forelock, and remaining in position until after the superior officer has passed.

Terms of Address

When speaking to a superior officer it is common to simply refer to them as "Sir" or "Ma'am" in accordance with their gender and in respect to their rank. It is only necessary to distinguish rank and name, in addition, when there are more than one senior officer present or multiple senior officers of the same rank.

Non-Commissioned Officers are always to be referred to by their ranks. For example: a Chief Deck Officer may be referred to as "Chief" or "Chief Deck Officer" depending on the NCO's wishes.

Enlisted are always to be referred to by their ranks or operating numbers. Example: A 3rd Class Crewman working aboard an Imperial-class Star Destroyer will be referred to either as simply "Crewman [Name]" or their Operating Number, which is their crew specialization; such as ISDST-0819 (Imperial Star Destroyer Sensor Tech #0819).

Training

"The time you spend at the Imperial Naval Academy is the longest period of officer's training in the Empire. At the end of thirty months of rigorous physical and academic training, you will receive a commission as Warrant Officer, Ensign, or Lieutenant in the Imperial Navy. You will know more than your peers, and have greater responsibilities than your peers. If you perform your duties well, they will not remain your equals for long. Officers from the Imperial Naval Academy, on New Bastion, are recognized as the very best the Empire has to offer. You will serve the Empire best by mastering everything you have come here to learn: the behavior and standards expected of an officer of the Imperial Navy. If you are selected for flight school, you have even more demanding training ahead after your graduation. You are expected to complete it with the same degree of excellence you will show in your general academy studies. Our credo is 'Service. Fealty. Fidelity.' This may be the first time you have heard it. By the time you graduate, it is the one you will never forget."

  • Excerpt from New Bastion Imperial Naval Academy's Cadet Indoctrination Speech delivered by Fleet Admiral Ishin Koga

Training Period

The Imperial Academy System was designed to provide the best, most comprehensive training for recruits of the Imperial Military as possible. Once a cadet joins the IAS they will officially be joining the Imperial Military. The training lasts for thirty months, the first twelve of which are dedicated to bringing each cadet to the height of physical and mental fitness, and mental well-being.

Games that are usually thought of as childish are used in order to place cadets within stressful situations, testing their reactions and seeing how they perform either in a leadership role or in taking orders from a fellow cadet. Sports are often the easiest way in which these things are judged, but is not the only barometer. Personality and how well a cadet gets along with their peers is also taken into consideration. During these months each cadet's cognitive skills and memory are also tested under adverse conditions, flexibility and the ability to improvise at need being encouraged.

After the first hurdle is passed during the twelfth month mark, cadets are tested to see which branch of the Imperial Military they are best suited for or which is needed. They will begin their general specialization classes during this time.

The last ten months of the Academy are dedicated to polishing skill sets and secondment to Imperial bases, orbitals, or vessels in order that cadets may have first-hand experience and gain knowledge from currently serving personnel. This secondment acts similar to an apprenticeship and often helps to see if cadets are truly suited to the specialization that they've been assigned.

Once finished and graduated, cadets are given their respective commissions. Depending on their performance, recommendations of officers and teachers, and the needs of the military cadets will be placed where they're needed most.

Specializations

Generally, officers hold command appointments over fleets, ships, or bridge crews; some also act in a specialized capacity, overseeing crews of other specialists, such as a science officer overseeing the engineering crew on board a vessel or orbital station.

The enlisted ranks comprise the Navy's largest compliment of standard specialists, security personnel, and technicians. Imperial Navy crewmen man ship stations and maintained systems, monitoring the various instruments on various vessels.

Organization

Headquarters

The Admiralty is the senior governing and administrative body of the Imperial Navy and reports to the Navy Commander-in-Chief. Most of the senior admirals that are on the board are also the heads of other organizations or branches within the Navy, in addition to their duties in the Admiralty. Beneath the Admiralty are the four main branches of the Imperial Navy, as described below (see: Administration). A sub-committee of officers, of all senior grades, is responsible for arbitration with other branches of the Imperial military and also oversees the Imperial Military Justice Division.

Administration

Within Naval Command, the Navy is administrated by four organizational branches: the Line Branch, the Flight Branch, the Fleet Support Branch, and the Support Service Branch. In addition, each of these organizational branches were divided into divisions that focus on specific areas in the Imperial Navy. The senior administrator of these four organizational branches is the Chief of Naval Operations (Operational Planning Office), who reports to the Admiralty. The current Chief of Naval Operations is Fleet Admiral Ishin Koga (who is also a member of the Admiralty). Each of the various branches beneath the OPO is headed by a senior admiral that is also part of the Admiralty committee.

The Line Branch

  • The Line Branch is responsible for the Empire's warships, capital ships, and support ships, as well as their commanders and crew. It is also tasked with handling strategy, tactics, and administration within the Naval combat forces. It houses various divisions, the three largest being the Line Deck Division, the Fleet Logistics Division, and the Line Administration Division.

The current commander of the Line Branch is Admiral Izak Belisarius, who's flag is currently aboard the Bellator-class Super Star Destroyer Resolute. When not actively using his authority to oversee a combat operation personally, his office is responsible for the deployment of all active combat-duty assignments.

Special Operations Division
  • Line Deck Division

The senior administrative body of the Line Branch, the Line Deck Division helps to coordinate all active combat deployments of the Imperial Navy. It is highly intensive and accounts for the possibility of open warfare as much as anything else. It is through this division that the operational orders are given for the creation of specific task forces or fleet squadrons, often at the behest of either the Imperial Moff Council or the Empress. Such assignments are usually rare, however, and most day-to-day assignments are handled by normal procedure. Ship logs and orders are signed and transmitted through this office.

  • Fleet Logistics Division

The administrative body that is responsible for overseeing that the ships of the Line Branch are adequately crewed. Basic repair and combat functionality of a ship is reported and logged with FLD. Requests for personnel training, replacement requests, and the handling of crew member deaths or retirement are handled by this office. Liaison officers from the FLD also coordinate with the Fleet Support Branch and the Support Service Branch for various services.

  • Line Administration Division

Responsible for payroll, astrographic data and compilation, and sundry other administrative tasks that the senior headquarters of the Line Branch either does not have time for or the warm bodies to throw at organizational difficulties. Short-falls in supply, repair, etc, are handled by the LAD.

  • Special Operations Division

A top secret branch of the Imperial Navy's combat arm, the SOD is responsible for most, if not all, covert operations undertaken by the Imperial Navy. It is not uncommon for the SOD to coordinate with other Imperial agencies, such as the ISB. SOD also acts as Fleet Intelligence, helping to collate and collect necessary data on strategic targets or current threats.

Strategic

The Strategic Organization of the Thrashian Imperial Navy is maintained by the Admiralty. This level of organization is predominantly focuses on defining and supporting national war policy and relates directly to the outcome of a war or other conflict as a whole. Usually, wars and conflicts are won or lost at this level rather than at the operational or tactical levels. The strategic level applies to all forms of war and conflict from military activities short of war through insurgent, conventional, and WMD warfare. This level involves strategic concepts, plans for preparing all national instruments of power for war or conflict, practical guidance for preparing the armed forces, and leadership of the armed forces to achieve strategic objectives.

Sector Group

A Sector Group was the sum total of Naval strength which the Empire expected to commit to a normal sector. A sector group could be expected to contain at least 2,400 ships in multiple fleets, 24~100 of which are Star Destroyers (Imperial-class Star Destroyers were the norm, but some groups contained older model Star Destroyers), and another 1,600 combat starships. The commander of a Sector Group received the title of High Admiral, but this was often a ceremonial post granted to the Moff who governed the sector. In sectors that were involved in constant and severe naval actions, however, the High Admiral was a separate position from the Moff. According to current Fleet tradition however, the title of High Admiral has been dropped -- as it's considered anachronistic. A sector group comprises multiple fleets, often combining multiple formations and operational responsibilities.

Fleet

The Imperial Navy has designated a fleet as a "sector resource", allowing it to operate on a sector-wide scale. A fleet was the smallest unit transferred between sectors. Comprising multiple systems forces, fleets typically totalled up to four hundred ships. With such a large number of units, there were thousands of potential types of fleet alignments. Common fleet deployment types included superiority fleets, assault fleets, and bombard fleets. Other examples of formations that a fleet might have taken included a deepdock fleet, support fleet, or ordnance fleet.

Operational

The operational level is concerned with employing military forces in a theater of war or theater of operations to obtain an advantage over the enemy and thereby attain strategic goals through the design, organization, and conduct of campaigns and major operations. In war, a campaign involves employment of military forces in a series of related military operations to accomplish a common objective in a given time and space. In activities short of war, a campaign consists of a series of related military, economic, and political operations to accomplish a common objective in a given time and space. Commanders should design, orchestrate, and coordinate operations and exploit tactical events to support overall campaign objectives. Where and when to conduct a campaign is based on objectives, the threat, and limitations imposed by geographical, economic, and cultural environments, as well as the numbers and types of military resources available.
